Lesson Plan Guide: Unit/Chapter Objective/Generalization/Big Idea

This 2-day lesson plan teaches 2nd and 3rd grade students about the 3 branches of the US government. On day 1, students will use websites to research and copy facts about the executive, legislative, and judicial branches onto a worksheet. They will then use the facts to create a 3-panel comic illustrating each branch using ToonDoo. On day 2, students will present their comics to the class. The lesson integrates technology, teaches research skills, and assesses student understanding through their comic and presentation.

Technology Integration:
Students will use the websites listed above in order to research the names of the Three Branches of
Government: Executive, Judicial, and Legislative. They will then use the information gathered from Google
and Kids.usa to write facts on their handout. Finally, they will visit the ToonDoo website, to create their very
own three step Comic illustrating and explaining the Branches.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the Three Branches in The United States government. The
students will use reading skills in order to read directions on the worksheet given to them. They will be
practicing their writing skills by copying two facts from the website on to their worksheet. They will finally use
the recorded information from surfing the web, to create a comic strip illustrating the Three Branches of the US
Government.
Academic language will be addressed in methods courses and is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 2.25
We will refer to the chart distinguishing the different branches as a test study tool.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular
lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: (5 minutes)
I will ask the students to reflect verbally on what they already know about our government.
I will then have students guess the three different branches and raise their hands to respond
We will brainstorm their ideas on the dry erase board.

Procedures:

Teacher:
(After 5 minute Intro)
1. Direct students to look at handout given.
2. The first direction on their handout is
to open their Internet browser to www.Google.com
3. Model on the whiteboard for students to type in:
Names of the United States Three Branches of
Government.
4. Instruct students to write the three names
Executive, Legislative, and Judicial on to the first
three columns of their handout.
5. Next direct them to the next direction on their handout:
Go to http://kids.usa.gov/three-branches-of-government/index.shtml
6. Inform students that this is where the chart on the Branches
of Government is located, and where they will find their
information to write facts on their handout.
7. Next direct students to www.ToonDoo.com where they
will create their own three step comic illustrating
The Three Branches of Government
8. Assist students needs on adding images and text boxes
on their Comic. Also show students how to Save their work.

worksheet chart.
5. In the Url search bar, type http://kids.usa.gov/three-branches-of-government/index.shtml
6. Read about each branch, and then copy two facts onto handout.
7. Enter www.ToonDoo.com into Url search bar.
8. Under Toons click Create Toon
9. Select a Three column horizontal strip.
10. Add in people, text boxes, and background colors to the strip to accurately illustrate
The Three Branches of The United States Government.
11. Be creative, but limit the amount of pictures you insert onto your Comic to 3.
12. Save your work with your Name as the Title.

Closure: At the end of the lesson, we will have volunteers come up to the Smart Board, where they can read
and explain their comic strip to the entire class.
If we have time we will compare and contrast our initial guesses on what the three branches of government
were to what we found in our online research.
