1. This document contains a homework assignment for a mathematical analysis course. It provides instructions for homework 3, which is due on March 16th, with late homework accepted until March 19th. 2. The homework contains 6 problems covering topics like Riemann integrals, limits, pointwise and uniform convergence of sequences of functions. Problem 1 deals with pointwise and uniform convergence of the sequence of functions fn(x) = x/(x+n) on the intervals [0,a] and [0,∞). 3. Students are instructed to submit their solutions to the first three problems by the due date in the appropriate location.

Homework 3
Please hand in your solutions of Questions H1-H3 before 8pm on 16 March 2015. Place your
homework in the pigeonhole for your tutorial group.
Late homework: Late homework should be placed in the pigeonhole before 8pm on 19 March
2015.

H3. For each n N, let fn (x) =

n2 x 2
, x R.
1 + n2 x 2

(i) Find f (x) = lim fn (x) for x R.

(ii) Prove that for each a > 0, fn f uniformly on [a, ).

(iii) Does ( fn ) converge uniformly on [0, )? Justify your answer.

1. For each n, let fn (x) =

x
, x 0.
x+n

(i) Prove that fn 0 pointwise on [0, ).

(ii) Prove that for each a > 0, fn 0 uniformly on [0, a].
(iii) Prove that ( fn ) does not converge uniformly on [0, ).

2. For each n, let gn (x) =

xn
, x 0.
1 + xn

(i) Find the function g such that gn g pointwise on [0, ).

(ii) Prove that for each 0 < b < 1, gn g uniformly on [0, b].
(iii) Prove that (gn ) does not converge uniformly on [0, 1].

3. Suppose that the sequence ( fn ) converges uniformly to f on the set E, and each fn is
bounded on E. That is, for each n, there is a positive constant Mn such that | fn (x)| Mn
for all x E. Show that the function f is bounded on E.
4. Prove that if ( fn ) converges uniformly on the sets A and B, then ( fn ) converges uniformly
on A B.
5. Show that if ( fn ) and (gn ) converge uniformly on the set E to f and g, respectively, then
( fn + gn ) converges to f + g uniformly on E.
6. Show that if fn (x) = x + 1/n and f (x) = x for x R, then ( fn ) converges uniformly to
f on R, but the sequence ( fn2 ) does not converge uniformly on R. (Thus the product of
uniformly convergent sequences of functions may not converge uniformly.)
