Magnets Study Guide

This study guide provides information about magnets to help study for an upcoming quiz. It defines key terms like poles, attraction and repulsion. It explains that magnets have north and south poles and opposite poles attract while like poles repel. It identifies iron, nickel and cobalt as magnetic materials and notes a naturally magnetic rock is lodestone. It describes magnetic fields and how they allow magnets to attract magnetic materials without direct contact. It distinguishes permanent magnets from electromagnets, which can be turned on and off by electricity.

Magnets Study Guide

Please use this study guide to help you study for your
magnets quiz on MONDAY, March 9, 2015. Read over the
information in the study guide and then answer the questions
in the back of the packet.
Magnets:
o A magnet is any object that pulls certain metals toward it.
Poles: The ends of magnets.
o Magnets have two poles. They are called the north pole and the
south pole.
o The poles are the strongest part of a magnet.
Attract and Repel:
o Attract means to draw near or adhere by physical force.
o Repel means to ward off, keep away, or draw back.
o Opposite poles will attract (A south pole will attract to a north
pole).
o Like poles will repel (A north pole will repel from a north pole).
Magnetic Materials:
o Iron, nickel, and cobalt are magnetic. Steel is magnetic because
it is made up of iron.
o A rock that we can find in nature that is naturally magnetic is
called lodestone.
Magnetic Field:
o The space or area around the magnet where the
magnetic force is acting.
o When a magnetic material is inside the magnetic field, it
will attract to the magnet.
o Remember: It is invisible! We cannot see the magnetic
field by itself, but it is always there for a permanent
magnet.

Permanent magnet: A bar magnet or horseshoe magnet. The magnetic

field of these magnets cannot be turned off. They will remain magnetic
for a very long time.
o If you drop a permanent magnet or hit it with a hammer, it will
lose some of its magnetism and not be as strong.
Electromagnet: When an electric current goes through a wire, a
magnetic field is created around the wire.
o The magnetic field of an electromagnet can be turned on and off
by US!
o We can also control the strength of an electromagnet. There are
a few ways to do this.
o Increase the number of coils around the wire
o Increase the current going through the wire
o Use a metal core, such as a nail or bolt

Answer the questions below. Try to do them on your own before you use
your notes to help you!
Which of
A.
B.
C.
D.

these is example of an electromagnet? (Circle all that apply)

Bar magnet
Electric motor
Telephone
Horseshoe magnet

Write whether the magnets below will attract or repel when they are moved
closer together.

Draw a magnetic field around the magnet below.

What will happen to a magnet if you hit it with a hammer? (This is in your
study guide!)

Name the poles of a magnet: ______________ and _______________.

What is one way that we can make an electromagnet stronger?

When you put a magnet close to another magnet or object, you can feel it
attracting or repelling. This is because of the ___________ ___________
of a magnet.

A rock that is naturally magnetic is called:

A. Graphite
B. Diamond
C. Lodestone

A magnetized needle that is free to turn and show direction is a:

A. Pencil
B. Compass
C. Nail

Magnets will pick up objects that are made of: (can be three answers)

Magnets are strongest at the _______________.
