Assignment 1: P P P P

This document contains 6 problems related to computer-aided mechanical design using CATIA software: 1) Finding the coordinates of a point after rotation around an axis. 2) Rotating a point about a line by 60 degrees and verifying the result in CATIA. 3) Listing the required transformation matrices to move two points and transform an original shape. 4) Expressing the mirror reflection of a point with respect to a plane as a combination of elementary transformation matrices. 5) Drawing a 3D model of an anchor bracket in CATIA. 6) Building 3D part models from 2D drawings in CATIA.

Assignment 1
1. Suppose the coordinate of point P0 is given as 0, 0, z0 in a coordinate system, and the
length of P0P1 is r mm, which is on plane XOZ. Line P 0P1 forms angle with the
horizontal plane. If point P1 is rotated around the Z-axis counter clockwise by angle
(see Fig. 1). Find the coordinate of the new location P2 after the rotation.

2. In a design, a line is constructed by connecting P0 1,1,1 and P1 5,5,10 , and point

P2 1, 2,10 is defined. If point P2 is rotated about the axis P0P1 counter clockwise by
60 degrees (see Fig. 2). Find the coordinate of the point P2 at the new location, and
verify your result by using CATIA.
If the line is constructed by connecting P1 5,5,10 and then P0 1,1,1 , will the result
be the same as before? If no, what is the difference?

3. Two points, A and B, constituting a portion of a two-dimensional shape are moved to
points C and D, respectively, resulting in transformation the original shape. List the
required transformation matrices, in proper order, that have to be applied to all the
points of the shape. The coordinates of the points are A (2, 2), B (5, 5), C (5, 2), and
D (7, 2+2

3 ).

4. A plane perpendicular to the XZ plane is located as shown in Fig. 3. If a mirror

reflection p* of a point p with respect to this plane is obtained by the following
equation, express TP-P* as a combination of the elementary transformation matrices

Z 1 .

The transformation matrices such as Trans(a, b, c), Rot(x, ) Rot(y, ) Rot(z, ),

mirror-xy, mirror-yz, and mirror-xz belong to the elementary transformation matrices.
In a design, point p is defined as 5,3,10 . Calculate the coordinate of its mirror
point p*. Please verify your result by using CATIA.
