The Market Economy
Social Studies/8th Grade
PO 1. Explain how limited resources and unlimited human wants cause people to choose some
things and give up others.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the relationship among supply, demand,
scarcity, and opportunity cost. The students will be assessed by providing the instructor with two
worksheets that applies to the objective
Key Vocabulary: If Applicable
Supply, Demand, Competition, Scarcity, Opportunity Cost
Methods for gathering evidence of students achievement of the outcome goals:
Instructor will go over homework worksheet with students and go over two problems in each
section with students.
Students will do a double sided worksheet that goes over supply and demand, opportunity cost,
scarcity, and competition.
Materials/Tools/Resources:
30 Student worksheets for each class period
Power Point
30 Power Point notes on hard copy so students will fill in the blanks for each class
Projector and transparences
Set or Hook
8 Minutes
Review the key vocabulary the students learned the day before.
Explain to the students the importance of economics and the importance the money flow
impacts their lives and wages
Make sure the students understand the key vocabulary from the notes they took the day before
and clarify any questions.
Expectations for you during the lesson are:
1. Instruct the students that they will fill in the blanks on their notes
2. The students will engage in conversation and ask questions for clarification
3. The students will not get off topic or interrupt when another student is talking
Instructional Input:

Hand out Power Point notes to students so they can fill in the blanks along with the
power point
Utilize the Power Point presentation to elaborate on the following
1. Scarcity
2. Opportunity Cost
3. Supply and Demand
While going over the presentation, I will ask the students for examples for each topic and
then if they cant provide one, I will give an example that relates to them. For example
the spending habits they have.
After we go through Power Point, hand out homework worksheet to students.
Do 2-3 examples of each homework question in each section for clarification with the
class.
Guided Practice:
Will hold a classroom discussion that goes over the questions on the homework. Periods 4 and 5
will have more examples given to them. Go over three question on each section of the homework
before they start those worksheets.
Independent Practice:
The students will do a double sided worksheet that goes over examples that the power point went
over. Scarcity, supply, demand, competition, and opportunity cost will be problems on the
worksheet.
Closure:
At the end of the lecture, I will summarize the main points we went through together as a class. I
will also explain to the class that the lesson has to deal with real life problems, such as the flow
of money in a stable economy and how their spending habits affect that flow.

More time going over the material during the presentation
Use a timer when the students go over the information with their shoulder partner
