Chaperone In the Works
Miege, Speak on Faith
By: LouieLaFeve

Next Tuesday,
Bishop Miege will be
host to a presentation
by Jesuit scholar Father Robert Spitzer.
The day before he will
be in Kansas City to
speak at the Archdiocesan Convocation for
teachers at the Overland Park Convention
Center.
He is famous internationally as a scholar
on the subject of faith.
His most well-known
work deals with the relationship between God, physics and
philosophy, and how the idea of God
fits into the modern scientific world.
According to his website, from
1998 to 2011 Father Spitzer served as
the President of Gonzaga University.

He has been a Jesuit since 1974, and

currently is active as the president of
the Magis Institute, which attempts
to counter scientific atheism with his
own brand of scientific Christianity.
He has written five
books and numerous
articles about his pet
subjects, as well as
producing
several
documentary films
and writing his own
high school curriculum with the help of
the Magis Institute.
He had taught at the
college level for almost 20 years before
accepting his position
at Gonzaga.
Miege seniors will be excused from
an hour of class that afternoon to hear
him speak, and seniors from Bishop
Ward will be bused over for the presentation.

Bishop Mieges 2013 Homecoming was a smash hit. With the
rather specific theme of Its times
like this that I think of you, many
were uncertain of how it would be
executed.
Their fears
were laid to
rest
when
the
dance
actually
commenced.
The Robotics team was in charge of DJing,
a change from the trend of non-student DJs. They played a wide selection of music, including old favorites such as Dont Stop Believing
by Journey.
The highlight of the dance according to most people, however,
was the rendition of the cup song
by Anna Kendrick, from the film

Pitch Perfect. It was performed by

select members of the senior class,
mostly those who had Mr. Anderson as a teacher. This classic performance featured the use of cups
as percussion for the background
of the song. Several weeks of practice were necessary to make sure
the performance went off without a
hitch.
Other
preparation
included the
usual Homecoming week
festivities.
Each grade
was assigned a science-fiction related theme. The seniors had Star
Wars, the juniors Space Jam, the
sophomores were assigned Tron,
and the freshmen went with Avatar.

Senior Mattea Pezza was
crowned Homecoming queen. Her
attendants were Kristen Agar, Gina
Avitia, Kali Eaken and Natalie Orrick.

Miege Sports Moves to 4A
By: AndrewJezak

yes, if we had had four more students

enrolled in the school on Sept. 22,
we would be in 5A for the 2013-2014
school year, but we have been moved
down to 4A. Mieges regular season
schedules will not
alter. All the Blue
Valleys and Aquinas games will
still be played in
every sport, the
only change will
come during playoffs.

Many opinions about our
move down have flooded the school.

Every year on Sept. 22 Mr.

from

to
the office of
the Kansas
State High Schools Activity Associations (KSHSAA). The

One little piece
of paper determines
against whom our
school plays each year
in the playoffs.

Now, how does
the KSHSAA determine what class each
school is in? Its solely
based upon student
population.
The 32
largest schools in Kansas are in class 6A, the
next 32 biggest schools
are in 5A, and the next
64 schools are in 4A.

Varsity baseball coach Will

to the postseason, Im going to have to
scout teams a little bit and find teams
that we dont usually play against,
especially Topeka Hayden who won
it last year. Hopefully we can make
it through our Regional and lets the
chips fall where they may.

The boys soccer coach Joe
Huppe has mixed emotions because
we cant defend our 5A state title, but
for the team and the boys after losing
so many seniors, it will be interesting

of the biggest.

EKL and play six 5A and 6A schools
to start the year for us, so it will be a
challenge to get through those games
healthy. Hopefully we can keep on a
roll once we get down there. Football
will still compete for the 5A state title
this year, but will contend for the 4A
state title for the 2014-2015 and 20152016 seasons. The reclassification for
football is based only on the bottom
three grades and is updated every two
years.

For NHS, the services will be

Going to any game
against Aquinas played by any
Miege sports team is solid proof
that the rivalry between Bishop
Miege and St. Thomas Aquinas
lives on, stronger than it was
in the beginning. More than
one month and 25 years since
they first met, Miege will face
rival Aquinas yet again. The
Nov. 1 away game at Aquinas
will commemorate the 25th
anniversary of the rivalry that
started with a Miege win of
44-7. Nov. 1 also brings to an
end the regular football season,
with Regionals starting the
following weekend.

Kansas City's Real Haunted Houses

By: AndrewGleason
staff writer

Pumpkins are appearing on every

doorstep and the wind has turned cool,
bringing with it bright orange leaves
and a cache of candy filling the shelves
at local grocery stores. Fall has arrived
in Kansas City, and with it the seasons
scariest holiday, Halloween.
Locals looking for a scare in the Halloween season assume that visiting the
West Bottoms is their best bet to start
their adrenaline pumping. After all, the
neighborhood harbors four commercial
haunted houses: The Beast, The Edge
of Hell, The Macabre Cinema, and The
Chambers of Edgar Allan Poe. What
these scare-enthusiasts dont realize
is that Kansas is also home to several
haunted sites that offer terror in their
own authentic ways.

Sauer Castle, located on
Shawnee Road in Kansas City, Kansas,
grapples with a history tainted by ghost
stories, which originated in the early

1930s. The legend of the Castle involves

the suicide of a woman grieving the
death of her husband, only for him to
return home, find her, and take his life
as well. While this tale has been proven
false, the Castle does have an eerie history.
Though much of the tumult surrounding the Castle has died down in
recent years, some say the restless spirits of the buildings victims still roam
its halls.
Pretty Boy Floyds Hideout, at
6612 Edgevale Road, is no stranger
to paranormal activity either. The
residence is where Verne Miller and
Charles Pretty Boy Floyd developed
their plan to aid Frank Nash in his prison escape by hijacking a train at Union
Station in 1933. The failed operation
resulted in the Union Station Massacre
a shootout that involved the death of
four law-enforcement officers, as well
as Nashs. Floyd and Miller returned
to the home, along with a wounded accomplice, who reportedly died in the
attic, according to The Pitch.

When Dennis Cross moved
into the house nearly 20 years ago, he
immediately noticed lights would randomly turn on. The Pitch reports that
Cross attempted to rewire the whole
homes electrical work, but the problems with the lighting persisted. Locked
doors would be found swinging open
when Cross returned to his home in the
evening, specifically the door to the attic.

Cross decided to let the house
trouble someone else, so he rented it
to two women, who decided to fix the
problem rather than fleeing from it, and
invited a priest to bless the house. Soon
after, the hauntings ceased.

The Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence, formerly the Free State Hotel,
is also said to be haunted. In the mid
1800s, the hotel was burned to the
ground twice, which was attributed to
the feuding between free-state advocates and pro-slavery forces, according
to Kathy Weiser, a writer for Legends of
America.

Visitors to the thrice rebuilt

Staggering Thoughts

hotel have made a few shocking discoveries - all centered around the ominous
room 506. Guests have claimed that
vapor, as if from a human breath, appears on the rooms mirrors with no
explanation. Other complaints include
the flickering of lights and doors opening and closing of their own free will.
Some have even gone as far to say that
the room itself is a portal to the spirit
world.

Whether these sites are actually
haunted or just historical monuments
tied to urban legend is for you to decide, but visitors almost
invariably say something just isnt quite
right about them.

Halloween brings a lot of tricks

and treats, and every year one of the
biggest treats is a cheap burrito ($2)
at all Chipotle locations.

All you have to do is go to
the store wearing a costume on Halloween night after 5 p.m. This is a
really good deal, as the burritos are
regularly priced at almost $7.

Theres usually not a wide variety in high

school jobs. Car washes, food service, retail and other
common endeavors usually come up the most if
you ask a secondary school student about his or her
occupation. Cornstalker is usually not near the top
of the list. However, its the profession of choice for
one senior.
Michael Hayo has worked at the Worlds of Fun
Halloween Haunt for three years now. Im a corn
stalker, he says. My brother went to apply a couple
years ago, and I decided to come with him. They hired
me right there.

It doesnt matter how lame

your costume is, or how old you are.
But be prepared to stand in line; this
is their busiest day of the year, because who doesnt love a giant Chipotle burrito? Last year the line was
wrapped around the entire Chipotle
building on Shawnee Mission Parkway, but it was a fun line to be waiting in, as everyone was in a good
mood in their costumes and anticipating a fun Halloween night ahead.

October 18, 2013

Dressed in his terrifying garb, he regularly torments

passersby with his spooky antics. I got to choose my
costume; I went with two long-sleeved collared shirts
and overalls. Oh and a creepy pumpkin face mask,
he said.
An average day is quite the adventure for Michael.
I hide, jump out, and say boo. I hide in corn. Hes
an equal opportunity horror-monger too. I scare
anybody, even little kids. Youre not supposed to, but
I do anyway. Scaring people is my favorite part. I like
my coworkers, too, though, says Michael.
Ive had some good reactions, according to
Michael. One guy fell over a rock. Oh, and one guy
punched me. I just laughed and went back into the
corn. My least favorite part though is when little kids
try to act tough and curse at you. And some people

who I'm around have really bad breath. Like, truly

terrible.
He also helps out around outside of his role as
a cornstalker. The hardest part is training people to
scare. And I also jump out at people in haunted houses
too. One time instead of yelling boo, I asked everyone
if they had a good time instead.
Being a creature of the night might not be for
everyone, but Michael enjoys it. I really like the
people I work with. They scare me sometimes when
I'm not expecting it. And I get free rides and can get
like five food items for two dollars at the food court.
In the end, meeting new people is always nice, and
my job lets me do that.

We should all be so lucky.

from 1973. If youve seen it, then you

know exactly what I am talking about!
I will tell you though, whoever did the
make up and the green stuff that the
demon throws up, deserves two-thumbs
up. After watching that I never wanted
to sleep alone again. A Nightmare on
Elm Street is something that I do not
recommend to someone who is about to
go to bed. After watching that movie I
suggest setting an alarm clock for every
ten minutes because you do not want
Freddy Kruger entering your dreams.

Have you ever gone to your
grandmas and looked in your moms
old room, and the first thing you see are
some creepy dolls that she used to play
with? You quickly back out of the room
and act as if it never happened. Then
your mom gives those dolls to your little
sister, and one night you decide to watch
Chucky, and as youre heading to bed you
confront one of those dolls. Yeah, it isnt
the greatest thing in the world. And thats
why I can never watch Chucky because I
think one of those dolls is going to sneak
up and kill me.

Have you ever wondered in scary
movies when people are being chased by
the murderer, and the victim is running
like crazy, and the killer is, you know,
just walking. Then all of sudden the
masked murderer just creeps ups behind
them. Things like that always happen in
Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Scream.

Bad Halloween Treats Really Grind My Gears
By: MarcoMarquez

staff writer

Do you know what grinds my gears? People who give out the worst goods on Halloween,
or the ones I like to call Candy Grinches. I mean
come on, people!

After 4th of July there really isnt another
holiday until Halloween. You have at least three
months to prepare for it. So really you have no excuse for not having candy in stock on Oct. 31. (And
if you are one of those people who leaves the front
porch light off, then you have no soul, and you
hate children. Sorry, but its a fact.)

Now can we all agree the main reason we
go trick-or-treating is to collect as much free candy
as our pillowcases can handle? YES! Now see, the
only thing thats holding us back from that goal
and Im not going to mention any names, but you
people know who you areyeah Im talking about
you oatmeal-giving, Nutri-grain-bar-supplying,
popcorn-handing-outand even those spider rings

are no fun, monsters!

Seriously, do you people not understand
that no one is going to want your healthy treats.
We want the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, M&Ms, 3

Musketeers, Rolos, and dare I say KIT KATS!

MMMM Kit Kats. I know when I go out on my

long trek scavenging for candy, I am going to

want the candy that I will just unleash on that
night. Then the next day while everybody else is
at school, I will be on my couch with an enormous
stomach-ache watching daytime television with
my grandma. Raking in the good stuff is so much
better than gathering some maple and brown sugar
oatmeal that I could eat any morning before I go to
school.

So Candy Grinches, if I have persuaded
you to rethink your good intentions and decide
to celebrate Halloween this year as it should be celebrated, then good. If you need some help on what
to buy, start with five bags of candy, preferably
king-sized and chocolate, not something you can
cook in a microwave. Hey, even pop is a great idea,
but not juice boxes.

Every year, more than 100 students at Miege
give up their spring break vacation time to head out to
one of the many choices of mission trips Miege has to
offer. Others sacrifice a few days of school and a couple
long bus rides to go to Washington, D.C. and walk the
grounds of the Capitol to support Pro-Life choices and
rights in the March for Life.

We have already heard from intercom
announcements that West Virginia tends to be one of
the most popular spring break trips, as it is currently
fully booked. The March for Life is similarly, and
not surprisingly, not adding any more students to

the roster at the moment. But there are other options

for volunteering that are just as good, and just as
meaningful.

My sophomore year, I took the short ride from
Bishop Miege to the other side of the city, to a church just
past the Kansas City Zoo. The demographics of the area
changed dramatically as the rich, beautiful landscapes
of the Plaza changed into broken down and barred up
houses and businesses. The trip showed parts of the city

I had never seen before, and certainly not up close.

Once started, students were split into separate
groups that would separate in the morning for different
assignments. Some went to Harvesters, while some to a
food kitchen, a house in need of repair, Restart, or a little
place called Spofford.

Spofford Home is another new volunteer
opportunity, offered monthly, by Miege. There one will
see many children who have all led an undeservedly
difficult life. Some have behavioral problems that need
special care, and some are from dysfunctional homes and
need good treatment for their well-being. Speaking from
experience, Spofford is an opportunity you do not want
to miss.

Now halfway through October, students have
already put in a hard days work last Saturday for
Christmas in October,
and Mieges Student
Council is preparing for
the annual Trick-or-TreatSo-Others-Can-Eat food
drive on Oct. 23. Anyone

High school students
typically do not have
the privilege of trick-ortreating after freshman

out that child inside of us
all, there is Trick-or-TreatSo-Others-Can-Eat. Who
doesnt still want to dress up as a favorite superhero or
villain? Stag Strut proves it every yeardressing up in
costumes is fun at any age.

On a serious note, the night will provide all
students at Miege a chance to go out into these grade
school communities and collect cans or non-perishable
food items to donate to Catholic Charities. The night
is a hit every year, and provides food for families and
individuals who are in dire need of a helping hand.

Miege Football Takes Aim at the EKL Title

By: LouieLaFeve

Last weeks game was a nail-biter against Blue

Valley West, with sophomore Nolan Gray starting
in place of injured Ryan Willis. On the final play of
the game, senior defensive back Jack Wirtz blocked
a field goal attempt, ending the game 21 to 19 and
leaving the Stags 5 and 1.

Nolan Gray showed no fear as he threw his
first touchdown pass to senior Jeffrey Martin. After
a Jaguars field goal, Gray showed that he could also
run the ball. Gray threw for his second touchdown
pass to Michael Murphy.

Fellow sophomore Dawson Downing had a
22 yard touchdown run that gave the Stags a 21-10

lead. As the Stags tried to waste time on the clock,

a fumble by Gray gave the Jaguars a chance. Down
by 8, the Jaguars quarterback ran it in for 6, but they
failed the two-point conversion. Then for the final
play, a blocked field goal by the Stags helped secure
the victory.
The Bishop Miege offense had one of its most
memorable games in recent history on Sept. 27, a
narrow 56-51 loss to Gardner-Edgerton. However,
its impossible to put 51 points on the board without a potent scoring attack, one that would serve the
Stags well down the line.
Miege had beaten the Blazers in their last two
meetings, making this an emotionally charged game
that kept the fans on their toes. Junior quarterback
Ryan Willis went 41 of 64 for a mind-boggling 558

yards and six touchdowns, 274 of those yards were

thrown to senior Michael Murphy. Every possession in the second half for both teamsexcept for
a Miege fumble and the final possession by Gardnerended with a touchdown.
I felt disgusted afterwards, said senior defensive end Jackson Kurtz about the hard loss. But
Im happy that we can move on. We still have a lot
of weapons, and a good amount of confidence. Im
sure we can get back on track.
Jackson proved a bit prescient, since the next
week the Stags responded with a 37 to 12 drubbing of Blue Valley Southwest. Brad Ivey had his
best game of the season, recording 13 tackles, one
of them for loss. Ryan Willis threw for three touchdowns, bringing his season total to 18.

Roller coasters are only fun
at large theme parks like Worlds of
Fun, Six Flags, and the like. Ride a
roller coaster at a cheap carnival, and
the ride shakes back and forth, weird
noises and rickety vibrations making one feel uneasy. Too much of either roller coaster makes any person
queasy. Point is, no matter where you
go, or what team you play for, a roller
coaster of highs and lows might be fun
at first, especially if you win, but too
much of the roller coaster is not a good
thing.
If one watched the games Miege
played versus St. James and compared
them to the later in the season games
against Topeka Seaman (both match
losses), one would not recognize the
team. Miege was a 5A team with St.
James, a 4A team with Topeka. Varsity
volleyballs season record stands, as
of Oct. 14, at 19-10. The team has led
a busy schedule since last issue, and
will continue to have a game nearly
every other day until the sub-state
tournament comes around Oct. 26.
Sept. 21 saw the volleyball team three
hours away from Miege in Maize,

to Wichita. The girls first win was over

match for the top tier EKL schools, to
say the least, giving the team a chance
to practice their less-played teammates: senior Sydney Buckley was
able to return to varsity in her first
game of the season after the injury to
her meniscus.

Miege was determined to
make it to the championship, defeating Garden City, Hutchinson, and
Derby, all teams that did not nearly
match up to Mieges final opponent
Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Kapaun is a currently 22-1-record-team, with their only season loss
to St. James. This game brought highlights of what the team could really
accomplish togetherthe first game
was a close loss, but the second was
the real anomaly to watchfighting
back from 20-24, Miege won with a final score of 28-26.

Juniors Nicole Purcell and Jessica Plake hit smart and hard on the
outside, while fellow junior Carson
Miller proved her value in the middle.
Setter Kali Eaken set with precision,
and the back row played their part to
near perfection in the end. The game
gave a rush to all present, but Mt. Carmel answered in the third and deciding set, giving Miege a second place
finish.

The soccer season has been
unsteady with on and off wins so
far. The team has some new faces
as well as many returning upperclassmen. Assistant coach Mr. Bill
Creach says that the team is finally
gelling together around Regionals.
We have had a tough schedule,
but we are doing okay, he said.

Junior Christian Foster
also says that the team has finally
figured things out. Our season
is going pretty well. Weve had a
slow start but I think we are getting
it together and doing our best.
October 18, 2013

The team has seven wins
with seven losses as of Oct. 14.
They had two victories in a row,
beating Lutheran North and St.
Paul Lutheran in the Kansas City
Showcase, but then lost their win
streak against Blue Valley Northwest in EKL play.

Overall, we were disappointed with the loss, but happy
with the way we played against
such a great team, said assistant
coach Nate Huppe. Luckily, the
Stags overcame their loss with a
win against Pembroke Hill on Oct.
7. Huppe says that the team just
stormed them defensively all over
the field and really dominated the
midfield, which he attributed to

helping the team win.

Another exciting factor
about this soccer season is that senior Nate Mohler was named the
NAIA High School Student Athlete of the year for all of Kansas
City. Every year, each high school
in the Kansas City area nominates an athlete who has been an
outstanding student as well as an
athlete. Nate stood out to them
because of all he has achieved,
said Mr. Creach. He will be honored on Nov. 6 at The Inaugural
Champions of Character Foundation Awards Luncheon at the Kansas City Convention Center Grand
Ballroom.

www.bishopmiege.com

giving full effort. Miege may not have

a chance to replay Aquinas or Topeka
in the same way, leaving only disappointing results to show for what
could have been a win.

Varsity would start the Manhattan tournament with three matches
in a row. Though the ladies defeated
BVW to kick-off the tournament, they
played tired against Olathe East, and
finished pool play with another win
over Gardner. The point differentiation between BVW and Miege was
small, but enough to place the Stags in
the silver bracket.

The team coasted through the
bracket, winning against Gardner for
the fourth time in the season and taking first in consolation.

Volleyball is now, as of Oct.
18, more than halfway through the
season, with mixed results to show
for it. Varsity is still trying to achieve
a consistent high level of playing, but
many kinks have been worked out and
refined. Blocking has improved drastically, but so has the back row defense.
Sub-state will bring new, unseen 4A
opponents to Mieges sights. Tuesday, they made the drive to Fr. Scott to
face Ft. Scott and Chanute, and senior
night was just yesterday, Oct. 17, and
both will be covered in the next issue.

Girls Tennis Serves Up Success

By: AndrewJezak
staff writer

In the by far most successful
year Ive coached, according to head
varsity coach Andrew Groene, the
girls tennis team has achieved monumental success.

Sending seven players to the
4A Regionals and two to State, coach
Groene is very proud of his girls. In
describing his team in one word he
could only reply with crazy. This
is the first of his five years of coaching that the varsity has had a winning
record, 5-4. With strong young talent and veteran leadership, tennis is
winding up a solid year.

Freshmen Mary Kate Rielley and Lily Gibson have provided
a much needed boost to the singles
courts. Both went undefeated and
claimed first place at Topeka Hayden
on Oct. 5. The pair traveled to Spring
Hill High School on Oct. 11-12 for the
4A Regional tournament. Rielley rose
to the occasion and took first place
overall for singles, thus advancing to
the 4A State tournament. Gibson also
had a great day achieving fifth overall
in the singles courts.

at the 4A Regional. Sophomore twins
Anna and Maddie Shramek competed
along with junior Maria Baska and senior Kate Poulose, who finished fourth
overall and advanced to State. Kate
simply stated, Its just a fun time out
there with the girls. She decided that
her best match of the season was when
they beat Aquinas and St. James in the
Catholic Doubles Duals.

Coach Groene stated that the
move to 4A would, most likely be a
benefit because the depth of the 4A
schools arent as large as the 5A and

Arrowhead Stadium stands proudly

as a Kansas City icon. (right)

From September to December, Sunday is my favorite day of the
week. Why is that? Chiefs football!
Now staying in the comfort of your
own home is good, but its just not
the same as waking up early and
heading over to the stadium. There
you will notice a sea of red and gold
adorning not only the fans, but vehicles as well.

You will also see buses full of
Chiefs fans pulling into Arrowhead
to start up a tailgate. Critics say KC
is where the best tailgate is, and I
believe it. A Chiefs tailgate is one of
the best things you will experience in
your life. There are tons of barbeque
and other types of foods, there are
fans playing football, and music from
the all over, including some people
who bring their own instruments to
play. Also once in a while you will see
an argument break out between our
fans and the opponents fans.

Tailgating is only half of the
fun. The real action starts as soon as
your ticket is cleared, and you can
walk into the stadium. If you dont
feel chills when you walk in, consider
yourself not alive. Walking through
the tunnel is probably the best part,
because as youre walking through
that darkness, you start to see a
bright light. That light leads you to a
whole different world, and suddenly
the field just appears in front of you.
The chills come back.

As the national anthem
starts, you hear a growing rumbling
sound and look up to see a stealth
bomber flying over head. To top it off,

as every Chiefs fan does, you shout

chiiiiiiiiiiiefs instead of brave at
the end of the anthem. Its not over
yet though. A video begins of history,
famous clips after clips of Chiefs football to excite the fans even more, and
KC Wolf rides a four-wheeler around
the field, hops off and tackles an actor running across in the opponents
jersey!

If you havent been to a
Chiefs game before, I highly recommend it. I also guarantee that you
will lose your voice and understand
why Arrowhead is the loudest stadium in America. Heck even when
your leaving the stadium fans are still
chanting oooooo! Over and over
again while their arm back and forth.
I hope by now I convinced you that
not only is Arrowhead the best atmosphere for a football game but also
that KC has the best fans in the NFL.

Arrowhead is also now
known as the Loudest Stadium in
the World. In week 6 of the 2013 NFL
season, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted
the Oakland Raiders. Guinness World
