Using FTP, Fetch, & X-Term: Transferring Files
Transferring Files
Fetch, ftp, and X-Term are programs used to move files between email accounts and a
computers hard drive. These programs are commonly used for adding attachments to
or retrieving attachments from email messages.
Before transferring any file, save all work and close all programs. Then follow the
instructions below with respect to the type of computer or operating system that is
available.

PC
Opening the Program
1. Click on Start, point to Programs, then Communications, then WS_FTP (File
Transfer), then WS-FTP95 LE. Click on the WS_FTP icon. The SESSION
PROPERTIES box will appear.
2. In the fields below, enter the information with respect to the account you are
copying the file to:
PROFILE NAME: type in the domain name of the account (i.e. Pegasus.rutgers.edu)
HOST NAME: type in the domain name of the account (i.e. Pegasus.rutgers.edu)
USER ID: type in the username
PASSWORD: type in the password
Confirming Files
The file name will appear in both windows to confirm that the file has been
transferred.
Quitting
At the lower-left corner, click on the CLOSE button to disconnect the account you
logged in to. Then, at the lower-right corner, click on the EXIT button to quit the
program.
Macintosh
Opening the Program
1. Double-click on the Fetch icon if it is on your desktop:
2. If the Fetch icon is not on the desktop, double-click on the following folders:

Confirming Files
Check your account and the computers hard drive to confirm transfers for both.
Quitting
From the File pull-down menu, click on Close. Then return to the File pull-down
menu and click on Quit.
UNIX
Opening the Program
At the Unix prompt, type the following and hit ENTER:
ftp> <Domain Name>
For example:
ftp Pegasus.rutgers.edu
Confirming Files
To make sure you copied the file successfully, type ls at the prompt to list all of the
files in the directory. The file will be listed if it transferred successfully.
Quitting
To quit the program, type the following at the prompt and press ENTER:
ftp> exit
