Observation

Task 6: Managing Behavior and Increasing Motivation

with Rewards and Awards

Focus:
To recognize various techniques teachers use for motivating students and rewarding good
behavior.

Objective:
The objective of this task is for student teachers to begin to understand the different strategies
teachers use to motivate students and encourage good behavior.

Awards
Identify the different awards your teacher gives.

Type of Award

Why it is given
Certificate
Because they participate in the
earth day.

Observation
Rewards and awards are used by teachers to motivate students to do well and to encourage
good behavior.

1. REWARDS:
This week, please observe a child with good consistently good behavior and one with
not so good behavior. Watch for their reactions when either they are rewarded or not
rewarded. Think about whether the reward system is effective for encouraging good
behavior. Write a paragraph about your observations.
The teacher give all the student certificate because they participate in the earth day
except for one student who called Tomiris because she forget to print it for her, all the
student were happy and proud because they got it, but Tomiris she was sad and she felt
jealous because all her friends got an award except she.
Note: the teacher didnt give rewards so I wrote about awards.

2. AWARDS
Talk to two students who have recently received awards.
Find out what they were for ? Because of the earth day.
How they felt when they got the awards ? They felt happy.

Reflection

Giving rewards to encourage good behavior is very controversial. That means that there are
two sides to this behavior management strategy.

Example:

Extrinsic
Some parents pay their children money for
good grades ($50 for each A, $40 for a B,
etc.). The child strives to get an A only for
the money he will receive. If he did not
receive money, he would not get an A.

Intrinsic
The child gets good grades because he is
motivated from inside himself to do well.
The good grade is reward enough.

In your reflection, discuss:

1. How are you motivated? Extrinsically or intrinsically? Give an example.
Intrinsically, I like to do something from my heart and work hard on it because I
like it.

2. Talk to your MST. Find out:
- What is her opinion about giving rewards? Gifts or words I say it for the kids so
they feel happy such as: well done and tap your shoulder.
- Is it always appropriate? Depends, you have to see what you are giving for.
- When is it appropriate? When they feel that they understand why and for what
they get it.
- When is not appropriate? Giving them without any reasons.

3. Is your teachers individual reward system effective ( from what you noticed )?
No.

4. Is your teachers group reward system effective? Why or why not? No, because
she dont want the childrens think that everyday when they will come to the
class they will get a reward without any reason, so thats why she prefers when
she gives them something it must be there important reason for that.

5. Your personal idea about using rewards in the classroom? Reward system affect
in a good way sometimes but not always because kids should know why they get
rewards.
6. What kinds of rewards do you think work best? Give each student points and at
the end of each day collect them and give the higher one gifts.

7. What kinds of rewards are not good? I think giving money for them even it was 1
DHS.

8. What can the teacher do to make sure that all children get rewarded from time
to time? Give them clear instructions always.

9. What kinds of awards did you receive as a student? I got a certificate from my
English teacher because I was the best student in the class for the whole month.

10. What is your opinion about awarding children for accomplishments? Good idea
because when children get certificate they remember it for the whole life.
