Module 1: Seismology and Plate Tectonics

This module introduces key concepts in seismology and plate tectonics. It discusses the formation of the Earth, plate tectonics theory, reasons for plate movements, seismic wave types and travel, locating earthquakes, and the tectonic history and seismicity of India. The seven lectures cover topics ranging from the introduction to seismology to the seismicity of India.

Module 1: Seismology and Plate Tectonics

Objective: This module introduces the subject of earthquakes from basics. Starting
from the formation and composition of earth, the lectures in this module discuss
various topics like the theory of plate tectonics, reasons for plate movement,
concepts of seismology, theory of continental drift, evidence for tectonic
movements, types of faults and plate boundaries, elastic rebound theory, types of
seismic waves and their travel in earths layers, shadow zones for seismic waves,
earthquake terminology and locating epicenter using wave arrival times are
discussed in detail. Tectonic movements in Indian subcontinent and historic
seismicity of India are explained. This module prepares the students to understand
why, where and how earthquakes happen.
Keywords: Seismology, plate tectonics, continental drift, composition of earth,
elastic rebound, types of faults, plate boundaries, seismic waves, shadow zones,
locating epicenter
