Assignment 4

The document contains three power system planning problems. The first problem involves the economic dispatch of three thermal generation units to meet a load of 450 MW, calculating costs as the load varies from 400-500 MW. The second problem involves operating a steam plant and hydro plant to meet two different load levels over 24 hours while staying within a water drawdown limit, writing the equations to minimize total generation cost. The third problem involves optimally sizing three power plants to meet a load duration curve and modifying the solution to incorporate two existing power plants. The fourth problem calculates the amount of zero carbon resources needed to meet a load of 2 million TJ while staying below an emissions limit, given emissions factors and energy amounts for various existing fossil fuel resources

Total water drawdown should be 100,000 acre-ft for entire 24 hours. Write the equations to be solved to
obtain minimum total cost of generation in 24 hours. List all the unknowns in the equations and ensure
that number of equations is equal to the number of unknowns. Determine the power generated in the
steam plant as function of time.

Load duration curve is given a straight line with the maximum and the minimum power
requirements of 160 MW and 40 MW respectively. Three different power plants are to be installed
to meet the load. (a) Determine the cost optimal sizing of these power plants to meet the load. (b)
If there exists two power plant of 20MW capacity each with variable costs of 50 and 10 Rs/MWy,
how would the solution obtained in (a) be modified so that the cost is minimized. Cost parameters
