Performance Task

The document presents a task for students to create a presentation arguing whether Cortez was a hero or villain from the perspectives of the Aztecs and Spanish. Students are asked to describe the worldviews of each society, take a position on Cortez, and support their position with evidence from how the differing worldviews impacted intercultural contact between the Aztecs and Spanish during the conquest. The presentation will be used in a documentary by the Discovery Channel. Students are provided a rubric and must complete a reasoning map, project with evidence, and poster to defend their argument about how intercultural contact influences societies' worldviews.

Cortez: Hero or Villain?

The Discovery Channel (Pincher Creek office) is creating a documentary on the
Spanish conquest to Tenochtitlan. They need to create a commercial that includes
the important details from before, during and after the Spanish conquest. It is your
job to create a convincing presentation that includes all of the important elements
from the contact between the Aztecs and the Spanish by answering the question;
how does intercultural contact affect the worldview of societies?
If the producer is convinced by your presentation, they will include it in their final
documentary.

Describe the Aztec and Spanish worldviews

Use the elements of worldview to explore the unique worldviews of the
Aztecs and Spanish.

Formulate position
To what extent was Cortez a hero or a villain?

Support position

worldviews of the Aztecs and Spanish.

a hero or a villain.

Final Project: Supporting my position

Your task is to create a poster that will defend
your argument for the question, how does
intercultural contact affect the worldview of
societies? You have been asked to create a
presentation that will convince the producer for
the Discovery Channel (Pincher Creek) about what
they should include in their commercial for their
documentary on the Spanish conquest. The
challenge involves dealing with multiple
worldviews and how they contributed to
intercultural conflict between the Aztecs and the
Spanish. You will create a project to highlight the
important factors that played a role during the Spanish conquest.
Your final project will be presented on a poster. Use your creativity to design
an appealing poster that includes an engaging title, images, text, quotes, etc.
Refer to the rubric below while creating your final presentation.
