Project

This document defines and provides examples of different types of transformations including translations, reflections, and rotations. It defines transformations as changing the position of a shape without changing its size or shape. Translations are defined as sliding a shape to a new position without rotating or reflecting it. Reflections are defined as creating a mirrored image of a shape across a line. Rotations are defined as turning a shape around a fixed point. Examples are provided for each type of transformation to illustrate how it changes the position of a shape on a plane.

Transformations

Karen Silva

TEKS For 4th Grade

demonstrate translations, reflections, and

rotations using concrete models
use translations, reflections, and rotations
to verify that two shapes are congruent
use reflections to verify that a shape has
symmetry

Transformation Definition

Transformation is changing a
shape using a rotation,
reflection, slide or dilation.

Example of Transformation
A transformation can be any movement on a plane.

One example of a transformation is a triangle being

turned at a 90 degree angle from its original
position to a different position.

Definition of Translation
Translation is a function
that moves an object a
certain distance, but the
object is not changed in
size nor is it reflected or
rotated.

Example of Translation
An example of translation is a shape sliding down a
plane to a new position.

Like a triangle moving from coordinates: (2,8), (6,8),

and (4,2) to the new coordinates of (0,9), (4,9), and
(2,3).

Definition of Reflection
Transformation is
when a figure is
reflected across a line
creating a mirrored
image.

Example of Reflection
An example of reflection is
when you have a picture of a
square on one side of a plane
and then you reflect it over the
x or y axis.
Y=X
Y = -X

Definition of Rotation

A transformation of a figure around a fixed

point. The fixed point is called the center of
rotation.

Example of Rotation

An example of rotation is a triangle rotation

around the coordinate (0,0) at any degree.
