28 FUNDAMENTALS OF ASTROLOGY
small correction noticed on page 61. I shall give you now the
consolidated results in the following Table :—
Lagna =610°-32'-4", Venus =$8.29°-33'-4"
Sun =4-21-58-47 Saturn —7-15-0-22.
Moon 10-10-5145, Rahu
Ketu
Gulika
Mandi
Note :—Here Mercury is retrograde. Hence in his case
and in that of Rahu the motion in degrees etc. is to be deducted
from the position given for 5-30 A.M. Ketu’s position is Rahu’s
increased by 6 Signs.
Now I must tell you how to calculate the position of Gulika.
For this you must first find out the length of the day (or night
in the case of a night birth) in Ghatis. In this case it is 30 Ghatis
57 Vighatis. Now the day of birth is Sunday. The length of
the day is to be split into 8 equal parts which are presided over
by the seven planets in order beginning with the lord of the week-
day concerned. Here it is the Sun. What about the 8th part ?
It has no lord.1 Now that part which belongs to Saturn is that
of Gulika who is a son of the former. Here it is the 7th part
where we have to locate Gulika. Find out the initial point of
the 7th part which is the end of the 6th one. This will give you
the time of rising of Gulika. The end of the 6th or the beginning
of the 7th part is 23 Ghatis 13 Vighatis. ‘The sunrise on that day
at Bombay is at 6-25 A.M. Then what is the time corresponding
to 23-13 Ghatis ? Itis9h. 17m. Add this to the time of sun-
rise. You get +42 P.M. which is the time of Gulika’s rising
Just as you have calculated the Ascendant for 9-55 A.M. so
have you to do for 3-42 P.M. on that day. The sidereal time
for that time is 14h 12m 6s, for which the Ascendant is 95-0°-
8'-3L". This is the position of Gulika. In the case of a night
birth the lordship of the first part is not that of the lord of the
week-day, but the one that is Sth from him. So if there is a
birth on the night of Sunday, the first part of the night would be
presided over by Jupiter and Gulika’s position is in the beginning
of the 3rd part.
1. According to one authority it is presided over by the lord of the first part.LAGNA AND OTHER HOUSES 29
At this juncture an explanation becomes necessary : Saturn
is said to have two sons viz. Gulika and Mandi. There are
some authorities that make no distinction between the two.
There are yet some who do not recognize at all these two minor
planets. But the rising of Gulika is strictly avoided in Electional
astrology or Muhiirta Sastra. Méndi’s presence is needed for
verifying the ascendant and longevity according to Mantresvara,
a reputed writer on astrology. The distinction between these
two minor planets (Upagrahas) consists in the fact that the
methods for calculating their rising periods are quite different
I have already explained the procedure for finding out the
presence of Gulika in the horoscopic chart.
Mandi’s rising is calculated as follows :—As before find out
the duration in Ghatis ete. of the day or night, as the case may
be. If the duration of the day is of 30 Ghatis, Mandi would
rise at the end of 26 Ghatis on Sunday, of 22 Ghatis on Monday,
of 18 on Tuesday, of 14 on Wednesday, of 10 on Thursday, of
6 on Friday, and lastly of 2 Ghatis or Saturday. In the case of
night births the Sth from that of the particular week day will
have to be considered. If the duration of the day or night is
more or less than 30 Ghatis, the above Ghatis given for the
rising of Mandi will have to be altered proportionately. In our
SOT. 26 Ghatis. That comes to 26
Ghatis 49 Vighatis or 10 h. 43 m. 36 s. from sunrise. Hence we
have to calculate the ascendant for Sh 8m 363 P.M.
Now it would be clear to you as to why these two planets are
not identical. Now the sidereal time (S.T.) for the above
moment, which you can work out as shown already, comes to
example it would be

15 h. 38 m. 56 s., for which the ascendant is 9-23°-23'52". This
is the exact position of Mandi for that day. For the present we
shall take into consideration only Mandi and not Gulika.
