Tutorial 11ccc

This document contains 4 questions about sampling theory and signals and systems: 1) A signal sampled at 2000 Hz is passed through a low pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 2000*pi rad/sec. The output of the filter would be the original signal since it was sampled above the Nyquist rate and the filter passes all frequencies below the sampling rate. 2) Several signals are sampled and passed through low pass filters with different cutoff frequencies. The output waveforms and spectra are analyzed. 3) A signal modulated by a 2000 Hz carrier is demodulated by multiplying by the carrier and passing through a low pass filter with cutoff 2000*pi. The output would be the original signal. 4)

Tutorial-11
Sampling theorem
Date: 1st 7th November 2004
Q.1. A signal x(t) = sin(2400*pi*t) is sampled by an ideal impulse train at a
rate 2000 Hz. This impulse train is passed through an ideal low pass filter of
cut off frequency 2000*pi rad/sec. What is the output of this filter.
Q.2. Consider a signal that is sampled using an ideal impulse train of
frequencies fs. The signal to be sampled is
x(t) = 2+ 2cos(2*pi*30t)+ cos(2*pi*80t).
Draw and label the line spectrum of xs(t), the sampled signal for
0<=f<=300 Hz. Then find the output waveform when xs(t) and its line
spectrum when xs(t) is applied to an ideal low pass filter with cut off
frequency fc .
(a) fs = 100 Hz, fc = 75 Hz.
(b) fs = 100 Hz, fc = 80 Hz.
(c) fs = 200 Hz, fc = 75 Hz.
(d) fs = 160 Hz, fc = 85 Hz.
(e) fs = 180 Hz, fc = 85 Hz.
Q.3. Let x be a real valued signal for which X(jw)=0 when |w|>2000*pi.
Amplitude modulation is performed to produce the signal
g(t) = x(t) sin(2*pi*2000t)
A proposed demodulation technique is illustrated in the figure 1., where g is
the input, y is the output, and the ideal lowpass filter has cutoff frequency
2000*pi and passband gain of 2. Determine y.

Q.4. Suppose
x(t) = sin(200*pi*t) + 2sin(400*pi*t)
and
g(t) = x(t) sin(400*pi*t)
If the product g(t)sin(400*pi*t) is passed through an ideal low pass filter
with cutoff frequency 400*pi and passband gain 2, determine the signal
obtained at the output of the low pass filter.
