Angular Calculation

This document describes an individual assignment to analyze the angular kinematics of a gymnast performing a giant swing on the high bar. Images were taken of the gymnast during one revolution on the bar with reflective markers placed on the bar and joints to calculate angles, radii, angular velocities, and linear velocities at different points. A table shows the calculated data for 11 frames including the angle with respect to vertical, angle in radians, radius, angular velocity, and center of mass linear velocity.

Introduction :
The biomechanics of gymnastics has been studied extensively by sports scientists. The high
bar maneuver as a giant swing is a good example of angular rotation. This laboratory will
be based on images of a gymnast which were taken from high speed films during a
gymnastics competition. A series of images during one revolution on the bar have been
combined into a single picture. Reflective markers were placed on the bar, and on the
shoulder, hip, and ankle joints of the gymnast.
