Unit 7-Sound & Light Study Guide

This document contains a 17-item study guide for a unit on sound and light. It lists key terms and concepts students should be able to demonstrate mastery of related to waves, sound, light, and their properties. These include defining terms like amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and describing phenomena such as resonance, interference, reflection, and refraction. The goal is for students to recognize all terms and concepts, and explain several applications and examples, to perform well on the assessment for this unit.

Unit 7Sound & Light Study Guide

This is a list of all the items you have used to rate yourselves during this unit.
If you can accomplish all of these goals you will do very well. If all you can do
is recognize some of the vocabulary terms then you need to study vigorously!
1. I can recognize the terms: wave, medium, transverse wave, longitudinal wave,
amplitude, wavelength, compression, trough, node, rarefaction, and frequency
2. I understand that waves carry energy in different ways.
3. I understand waves and I can determine if a wave is transverse or longitudinal.
4. I understand how move and I can calculate the relative frequency of waves visually
and I can calculate the wavelength, frequency, and velocity of waves given the
necessary information.
5. I can recognize the terms: speed of sound, ear drum, cochlea, pitch, ultrasonic
waves, subsonic waves, intensity, decibels, Doppler effect, ultrasound, SONAR.
6. I can determine the direction an object is moving based on the sound it produces in
relation to me.
7. I can recognize the terms: music, noise, forced vibration, resonance, harmonics,
fundamental, overtone, interference, constructive interference, destructive
interference, beats, acoustics, reverberation, anechoic chamber.
8. I can explain what happened to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge with regards to
resonance.
9. I can recognize and depict the difference between music and noise by illustrating
what happens to the waves during music and noise.
10. I can find evidence of beats, interference, and harmonics in graphs of sound
waves.
11. I recognize the terms: light, electromagnetic (EM) wave, EM radiation, EM
spectrum, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, microwaves, radiowaves, visible
light, et cetera.
12. I can identify what part of the spectrum light is from based on what it affects and
the wavelength of the light.
13. I can recognize and define the terms: opaque, transparent, translucent, white
light, black light, rods, cones, color blindness, light color, filter, pigment, afterimage.
14. I can tell the difference between colors produced by light and by pigment.
15. I can predict what color will appear given two different color light sources or
pigments.

16. I can recognize the terms: reflection, normal, angle of reflection, angle of
incidence, specular reflection, diffuse reflection, law of reflection, refraction,
diffraction, and interference (light).
17. I can explain what light behavior occurs during applications like rainbows, thin
films, fiber optics, diffraction gratings, and the broken pencil.
