The key takeaways from the unit are that it covers different types of networks including local area networks, wide area networks and metropolitan area networks. It also discusses concepts related to the internet and online communication.

The different types of networks discussed in the unit include local area networks, wide area networks, metropolitan area networks, wired networks using technologies like Ethernet and fiber optics, and wireless networks using technologies like WiFi, Bluetooth, infrared and satellite.

Some of the strategies used to teach the concepts in the unit include picture interpretation, brainstorming, Socratic questioning, group discussions, research activities and scenario-based learning. Both individual and group work are incorporated.

Unit Details
1. Networks (2 periods)

This lesson begins the unit with the use of the Picture
interpretation a critical thinking strategy, where students will
be given a picture to analyse and write on what they see. This
will help find out students knowledge on networks and also
gauge their critical thinking skills. This lesson is conducted
in the computer lab with Internet Access.

2.

Cable/Wired Transmission
Media (3 periods)

Explain the term Networks

Explain the benefits of using Networks
Describe the different types of networks and
how it is used in real life.
o Local Area Network
o Wide Area Network
o Metropolitan Area Network
Differentiate between small and large
networks

This lesson will use Socratic questioning and brainstorming

as students will be given a scenario to brainstorm and answer
scaffolding questions on it. Students will be placed in groups
where they will discuss the scenario with each member of the
group to answer the questions.
Explain the term Bandwidth
Explain the terms Broadband, Narrowband
and Voiceband
Explain how wired technology works
Describe the different types of wired

3. Wireless Transmission Media

(2 periods)

technology by showing examples

o Unshielded Twisted Pair
o Coaxial Cable
o Fibre Optic Cable
Choosing the most appropriate
technology for a given situation.

wired

This lesson focuses more on the Socratic questioning

techniques with a little brainstorming involved. Students will
be in a circle to discuss the various types of wireless
networks available.

4.

World Wide Web and

Websites (3 periods)

Explain how wireless technology works

Describe the different types of wireless
technology with real life examples.
o Microwave
o Satellite
o Bluetooth
o Infrared
o Wifi
Choosing the most appropriate wireless
technology for a given situation.

This lesson focuses on both the use of Brainstorming and

Socratic questioning where students are given an activity
sheet to work on by themselves. In this lesson the teachers
role is to guide the students.

5. Online Communication
(3 periods)

Explain the Internet

Explain the World wide Web
Explain Webpages and Websites and how it
works on the World Wide Web
Explain the term Web browser
Explain the different tools and languages used
to create webpages and websites are created
Explain term HTML and XHTML
Create and Design a simple webpage using
HTML code
Explain the term URL and its purpose

In this lesson students will be in groups of 3s and conduct

research on the internet. This lesson will focus more on the

Brainstorming strategy. Students will also discuss among
themselves in their groups how the terms researched are used
in their daily lives.

6. Evaluation (2 periods)

Explain how files are transferred from one

computer to another
(Uploading/Downloading) using FTP and
HTTP
Explain the term Podcasting and how it works
Explain Synchronous and Asynchronous
communication with real life situations and
examples
Explain what is Email?
Explain what is blogging?
Explain what are online chats?
Identify advantages of using online
communication

A written evaluation based on the entire unit will be given to

the students at the end of the unit to assess their
understanding of their large and small networks and the
Internet.
