answering questions on their white boards.

Introduction
Before Lesson:
Have learning targets written on the bulletin board and
agenda posted on smart board.
Activating Prior Knowledge
Review from yesterday by having students decipher between
mean, median, and mode by answering questions on white
boards.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
As each student enters the room, they were handed a set of
post it notes.
1. In periods 1&2- each table will share a set.
2. For LS- each student will receive their own set.
The students are to use the numbers as a set and calculate
the mean, median, and mode of the values.
I will quickly check their answers with the color-coded key.
State that we are missing one more important way to
describe data. Ask if anybody knows what it is.

The range is another way to describe a set of data along with


mean, median, and mode.

How did the students do on the post-it activity?
Question what they know about range.
Modeling of the Concept
Introduce range by stating the definition and having the
students fill in their information organizer from yesterday as
we move along.
Give a few examples of how to calculate range on the smart
board.
1. Have a list of numbers on the board.
2. Circle the highest value and the lowest value. Go over
that these are also called maximum and minimums.
3. Subtract the lowest value from the highest value.
Have students complete their organizer by folding it along the
centerline and cutting the front flaps.
Transition
Now that we have learned all four descriptors of data sets, we
are going to work with them all together.
Pass out card activity worksheet.
Guiding the Practice
Practice mean, median, mode and range with the card game.
1. Have students in class pick 8 cards from a deck.
2. Fill in the cards on the worksheet with the numbers.
3. Find the maximum, minimum, mean, median, mode,
and range of the set.
We will begin this activity together step-by-step for the first
problem set.
Providing the Independent Practice
The students should move at their own pace for the
remainder of the activity. They can work with partners if
theyd like.
The students may begin Practice 6-2B, which is their
homework for the night.
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special
Needs
An information organizer is incorporated into the lesson to
organize the notes and provide a study tool.
1. Students may refer to the organizer during the review
activity.
The teacher will teach the lesson over an extended time of
one extra period and at a slower pace with more examples.
Set timer for 7 minutes for post-it activity.
The post it notes are color coded so they are differentiated to
each students ability level. Also, the number of post-it notes
may be reduced.
The number of cards drawn can be reduced.

Directions are read by the teacher and the students should


recall what they will be doing before beginning the activity. A
print out of directions for the card activity are given to each
student.
Work done during the card activity is monitored closely. (The
PCA is able to monitor and assist).

For LS- use red/green smiley Popsicle sticks to check for who

students find the range. Collect on the way out the door.
