Linux Day - 1 Intro3

The Multics project started in 1965 as a joint effort between AT&T Bell Labs, General Electric, and MIT to create an operating system called Multics using assembly language. In 1969, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs redesigned Multics and introduced the new Unix operating system, written 80% in C language and 20% in assembly. Later, Unix was totally rewritten in C and renamed to UNIX in 1973. As different vendors adopted Unix, various flavors emerged such as System V from AT&T, SunOS and Solaris from Sun, AIX from IBM, and HPUX from HP.
