Activity 8: Applications of Rational Functions
Question 1
The profit function for a company selling widgets is given by

p( x ) 2 x 2 5 x 2

where x is the number of widgets sold. The average

profit per widget is given by: A( x)

p( x)
.
x

a.

Write the defining statement for A( x).

b.

What is the domain of the function, considering that A( x) is a model for a

real-life situation?

c.

What are the break-even quantities of x (i.e., when profit is zero)?

Question 2
The value of a new car, in dollars, x years after it was purchased is modelled by:

f (x)

42000 5 x
2 0 .5 x

a.

What was the value of the car when it was new?

b.

What was the value of the car after 5 years?

c.

What is happening to the value of the car as time passes?

d.

What is the scrap value of the car (the least value the car can have)?

Question 3
An ice skate manufacturer has its cost function defined by C(x) = 2500 +20 x for the
professional line of skates.
a.

Write an average cost function A(x) for producing x skates.

b.

What is the domain of A(x)? Explain the elements of the domain in the
context of the problem.

Question 4
Mark and Heather are graphing rational functions for their class. Mark is graphing
the function: f ( x)

3x 5
5 3x
and Heather is graphing the function g ( x)
. The
x
x

teacher asks the following questions.

a. What is the domain of your function?

b. What are the asymptotes of your function?
c. Graph the two functions. What do you notice about the two functions?

Question 5.
A home computer costs $9/year in electricity costs. If a new computer costs $2000 to
purchase and lasts for 5 years, find the following:
a) Determine the total annual cost for this computer. Make sure you include the
cost of the electricity, and remember you have the computer for 5 years.
b) Determine a function that gives the annual cost of a computer as a function of
the number of years you own the computer.
c) Sketch the graph of the function you have developed in (b).
d) What are the asymptotes for this function and what do they mean in the
context of the problem? Is this realistic?
