Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful
early childhood education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and
communities. They know about, understand, and value the importance and complex
characteristics of childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to
create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to
involve all families in their childrens development and learning. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:


As part of my ECED 130 Developmentally Appropriate Guidance course in the spring of
2014, I created a persona doll. After creating the doll, or avatar, I created a short
background story for her. It was required to give the avatar a different family background
from the typical child. For this I decided that my avatar would be adopted by a family
that is a different race. I then wrote a short childrens story about a time in her life when
she had to use pro-social behavior.

Analysis of What I Learned:


As a result of this artifact, I learned that every child has a unique background and that it
is important to be respectful of any differences. As well as that there are different
families other than the typical mom, dad, and biological children families. There are
families who have adopted children, two parents of the same sex; families where there is
not a parent in the picture, but there is another relative; as well as many others.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC


Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competence on the NAEYC Standard Two: Building Family
and Community Relationships by demonstrating my understanding of the value of
reciprocal family and community partnerships in raising a child. This artifact helped me
to learn more about the complexities of family relationships and how communities help
families to support and empower children while learning. This knowledge will allow me to
build strong bonds between myself and the families of the children I will be working with
and to draw upon community resources. It will also allow me to involve all families in
their children's development and learning by valuing their input and encouraging their
participation in the classroom.
I can use this standard in my classroom by incorporating the community into my
curriculum. This can be done by taking field trips as a class to experience different
aspects of our city. Some places the class could visit are different parks, the public

transportation system (the bus station), or museums. Some other ways to get the
community involved would be to invite community members into the classroom to talk
with the children about their careers.
