Assignment Esteem

The document provides general design data for a concrete structure including: - The concrete has a characteristic strength of 28 MPa and grade of 24 MPa, with a unit weight of 24 kN/m3. - Reinforcement has a characteristic strength of 500 MPa and consists of BRC A10 wire mesh. - Beams of size 200mm x 500mm were selected with span to depth ratios of 13 to 18. - Slabs are 100mm thick to control deflections. - Columns are sized at 300mm x 300mm.

INTRODUCTION:

GENERAL DESIGN DATA

Concrete
The characteristic strength fck is 28 days cylinder strength. The grade of concrete appropriate for
use should be selected taking account of following factor:

Adequate strength for the limit state requirement

Durability

The grade of Concrete is 24 N/mm2

Unit weight of concrete is 24 kN/m3

Reinforcement

Design based on the appropriate characteristic strength or a lower value if necessary to

reduce deflection and control cracking.

For high yield steel the strength is 500 N/mm2

Reinforcement provided is BRC A10 which is wire mesh with 10 mm diameter.

Beam
The selection of beam sizes is often dictated by deflection control criteria. Span to overall depth
(L/h) ratios of 13 to 18 are generally found to be economical in the case of simply supported and
continuous beam. The size of beam used in this design is 200mmX500mm.
Slab
Slabs are plate elements forming floors and roofs in buildings which normally carry uniformly
distributed loads. The selection of slab thickness from structural viewpoint is often dictated by
deflection control criteria. The thickness of slab proposed to be used is 100 mm
Column
Columns do not contribute to resistance of horizontal actions. Column sizes should not be
significantly different from those obtained using current practice. The design size of column for
this bungalow is 300mm x 300mm.
