p1 Explain How Networks Communicate

The document discusses different types of computer networks: - Personal area networks (PANs) connect devices within a few meters and are used for personal data transmission. - Local area networks (LANs) connect computers within a single building using Ethernet cables or WiFi. They allow file sharing and communication between users. - Metropolitan area networks (MANs) span multiple buildings like a university campus, connecting LANs with fiber optic cables. - Wide area networks (WANs) connect LANs across broad geographic areas like countries, using central buildings to link the LANs.

P1 Explain how networks communicate.

Network Fact Sheet

PAN

A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for data

transmission among devices such as computers, telephones and personal
digital assistants.

LAN

A LAN (local area network) network is used for connecting computers to each
other by using a single network.

MAN

A metropolitan area network (MAN) is computer network larger than a

local area network, covering an area of a few city blocks to the area of an
entire city, possibly also including the surrounding areas
A WAN (Wide area network) is a network that spawns over metropolitan,
regional, national or international boundaries.

5 Network topologies
Topology diagram

Explanation Five facts about each

1. A pan network is normally used for
data transmission with devices such
as computers, telephones and
printers.
2. A pan networks reach varies from a
few centimetres to a few meters
3. A pan network is typically limited to
personal use and is not developed
for a large amount of users or
devices
4. A possibility with a pan network is by
using one device connected to a pan
network someone can communicate
with that device so it will send data
through the pan network that it is
connected to
5. A pan network can be used to
connect a few computers in a close
proximity so they all share the same
files
1. A lan network can be used to
connect a entire building together
2. A lan network is typically used for
high speed connection between
computers in a building no matter
the buildings size
3. A lan network can connect
computers through Ethernet cables
or wifi
4. To protect a lan network they will
typically issue a username and
password that needs to be entered in
order to gain access
5. When connected to a lan all the
users on the lan are able to
communicate with other users

1. A man network will be used to

connect computers between several
buildings in a close proximity
2. This is typically used on university
campuses or other big areas that
involve multiple buildings needing to
be linked
3. A man network can run a lot slower if
not given the correct hardware so it
can cope with the wide area and the
large amount of users
4. A man network is normally achieved
by connecting multiple lan networks
5. In order to improve the connection of
man networks fiber optic cables will
be installed.
1. A wan network will include several
buildings to be connected together
2. This can be achieved by the use of a
central building which contains the
hardware to run this type of network
3. Instead of linking individual
computers to the network it will only
be the lan networks that are linked
to a wan network
4. A wan network will be used across a
country to other countries around
the world
5. If a wan network was to go down it
would not affect the lan networks
that are connected to it
1. This type of network is used for
connecting only certain computers
together
2. This can be done without a hub and
simply connecting the computers
together with multiple cables
3. A limit to the amount of access from
one computer to another can be set
on individually on each computer so
some can have more restricted
access to what can be done.
4. This type of network allows for a
reduction in network traffic by
redirecting some of the traffic to
another computer
5. If one of the computers were to
breakdown there are always the
other computers which can each
take on the work that the broken
computer was doing.

What is? And what does it do?

A
workstation

A workstation was released was first released in 1960. It was a

computer specifically designed to help a person with the work

they get from a job. For example a workstation had considerably
more memory than a typical mainstream computer and would
have higher grade parts. They were typically used for animating
as they could easily assist someone in creating a 3d animation.
A Network
Card

A network card is a piece of technology that allows you to

connect to the internet. This is because the network card will
have an Ethernet port or give the computer wireless capabilities
with a small antenna attached to the card.

Ethernet
An Ethernet cable allows for a computer to be linked with a
network by a wire. This helps for computers that dont have
wireless capabilities and is considered to be a faster choice than
wireless.

What it does
A repeater is a piece
of technology which
sole purpose is to
help extend a wireless
signal from a network
by receiving the
transmission from the
network and sending
it back out.
Hubs are central
connection points for
a network. When the
hub receives a frame
(frame carries data)
it is amplified and
then transmitted to
every computer
connected to the hub.
A network switch is
used to connect
devices together on a
computer network, by
using a form of packet
switching

A

Router

A router will forward

data packets between
computer networks.

Bridge

A network bridge is a
device that can
connect multiple
network segments.
