What

is
Communicative
Language
Teaching
Strategy?
Presented by Souha Aranout
Facilitator: Teaching English As a Second Language

Goal of Communicative
Approach
The

Communicative approach
emphasizes the ability to
communicate the message in
terms of its meaning, instead
of concentrating exclusively on
grammatical perfection or
phonetics.

History of Communicative Approach

Communicative

Language Teaching
is a natural follow-on from the
reaction during the 70s against
previous methods which over-focused
on teaching grammatical structures
and template sentences, and which
gave little or no importance to how
language is actually used practically

Features and Principles of Strategy

1) Focus on meaning.
2) Communicative competence is the desired goal.
3) Learner-centered.
4) Fluency is the primary goal.
5) Students are expected to interact with other people,
either in oral practice.
6) Dialogues, if used, center around communicative
functions.
7) Intrinsic motivation will spring from an interest in what
is being communicated by the language.
8) Task-based.

Intended Learning Goals

Communication

in the classroom is
achieved by creating real-life
situations. Task-based activities are
developed to ensure that
communication takes place between
the learners.

Characteristics
Understanding occurs through active student
interaction.
Teaching occurs by using authentic English texts.
Students not only learn the second language but they
also learn strategies for understanding
Importance is given to learners personal
experiences and situations, which are considered
as an invaluable contribution to the content of the
lessons
Using the new language in unrehearsed contexts
creates learning opportunities outside the classroom

Teachers Role
To

facilitate or guide the

communication process in the
classroom
To act as an independent participant
within the learning- teaching group

Learners Role
The

role of the learner is very

different from the one found in
traditional classrooms
The learner is not only a passive
listener but an active participant in the
classroom

Learning By Doing Materials

Text-based materials
These include game
boards, role-play cards,
materials for drilling, pair
work tasks, etc. They
might be used to support
real life tasks such as
role playing booking into
a hotel, or a job interview.

Task-based materials
practice exercises, reading
passages, gap fills,
recordings, etc. can be
found in almost any
course book as well as in
books containing
supplementary materials.
They form an essential
part of most lessons.

Conclusion
Communicative Language Teaching Approach is very....

Fun
Rewarding
Motivating

to all learners

Because in communicative classroom the learners are happy and never,

comfortable and never shy to participate!
