Assignment-2
1. A survey was taken to determine if there is a relationship between students having a computer in their
home and their school division (elementary, middle, secondary). A random sample of size 250 produced the
following results.
Division

Middle
Secondary

Is there evidence that school division and having a home computer are independent. Use a 0.05 level of
significance.
2. A velocity probe provides a voltage output (E) which is related to velocity (U) by the form: E = a + bU m , where a, b
and m are constants. A calibration experiment is performed and the data is recorded below.
(a) Find an appropriate curve fit using least square method.
(b) Perform Chi-square test to find goodness of the fit, if the confidence level is 95% and the expected variance of the
measured value is 1.1.

3. In case of a bi-metallic thermometer, show that the radius of curvature can be derived as
R=
1
t 3(1 + t r )2 + (1 + t r Er ) Er2
t r Er
6(1 2 )(1 + t r )2 T
where, 1>2, t is the combined thickness of the bi-metallic strip, tr= (t2/t1), and Er= (E2/E1), T is the temperature change.
