NURS 2021H Clinical Course Mid-Term Evaluation

Course
Objective
1

Demonstrate
competency in
navigating the
complexities of
family nursing.

Progress
Evidence/Indicators
While working in this clinical
placement, I was able to
approach each family and
treat their care as
individualistic to their needs.
For example, I always ask the
mother what method of
feeding she has decided to
use without assuming
automatically that they will
choose to breastfeed. I do
this because I know that it is
not convenient for every
family to breastfeed their
child and to not have that
judgment is essential to
family nursing.
Due to the belief in
phenomenology that our
views of people, situations
and the world is never
deemed objective or factual, I
have used this belief to be
open to different customs
and principles familys may
have when it comes to caring
for their child. I respect their
wishes and do my best to be
their as a guide to help them
navigate through this new
experience.
Lastly, in terms of
breastfeeding, I have read
the literature and used lab
experience to educate myself
about the best practice
guidelines of breastfeeding.
This will allow me to act as a

and help both baby and mom
into this new transition. This
relates to family nursing
because each mom is
different in the way that
breastfeeding is efficient for
them; not everyone will use
one position so I can act as a
guide to provide care that is
centered to them.
When caring for patients, I
always try to keep in mind
the CNAs code of ethics in
terms of the nursing values
and ethical responsibilities to
guide my care. I strive to
provide safe, compassionate,
and competent care
regardless of race, age, or
religion. Everyone in our
health care system deserves
optimal care and mothers
and their newborns especially
during this new experience.
As a nurse, you are exposed
to privy information about
the intimate details of a
patients life and it is your
duty to respect their
confidentiality and privacy.
Therefore if there is a mother
who may have taken harmful
drugs during their pregnancy
that has affected their
newborn after delivery, it is
my responsibility to treat that
child despite any judgments
or bias I may have and
respect their privacy if they
wish to remain anonymous
These values were learned in
NURS 1000 and 1001 and
continue to influence my
practice, especially in
maternal child.

At the beginning of each

clinical shift, I study the
report sheet I have been
given for my patient and take
the time to understand their
current needs and situation. I
then make an effort to
introduce myself to the
charge nurse I will be
collaborating with and let her
know I am always available if
she needs an extra hand.
This will allow myself to
create an opportunity for
accountability and create a
dialogue that will be an
resource for questions or new
learning experiences.
While I spend my time doing
my q4h assessments, I make
an effort to engage the
mother in a conversation to
make them feel more at ease
and open the floor to any
questions she may have.
Also, while doing the babys
assessments, I may sure to
let the mother know about
the progress of him or her
because, Im sure that her
number one priority is
knowing that her child is ok
and healthy. This allows me
to create a relationship with
the mother and give her the
opportunity to trust in the
quality of care she is being
given.
My plan of care consisted of
balancing my time efficiently
to allot necessary time for
my required duties. I would
make sure I arrived on time
to both demonstrate
accountability and have
enough time to go over the

report to gain a substantial

understanding of my
patients current situation.
Next, I begin my assessment
at the proper time but also
adapt to he needs of the
patient; if the newborn is
feeding at the time of the
assessment, I can give the
mother some time and
reassure her I will be back at
a more convenient time. After
completing the assessment
in an efficient amount of
time, I really take the time to
create a concise and
accurate documentation of
my findings. Documentation
and charting is absolutely
critical to provide competent
care to a patient because it
gives any nurse the
opportunity to look at the
findings and gauge the
patients current health
status; especially if their
vitals dont correlate to her
norms. By creating this
concrete foundation, it also
allows me time to be a
helping hand to fellow nurses
to allow care to be given
efficiently and ensure that
everything is getting done to
the best of my abilities.

very tired or stressed, I can
offer to watch or hold the
baby to allow her to take
some time for herself
whether she wishes to go get
some food or relax. This
allows promoting the health
for the mother, which may
sometimes be overlooked as
a priority.
During my LEARN reflection, I
took the time to assess how a
certain experience impacted
me. Looking back I can see
how these new experiences
will influence the care I give
because I have learned from
past mistakes and grown as a
person because of them. This
is an essential aspect of
nursing because it allows us
to take prior experiences and
apply them to future cases.
During my first clinical
rotation, I took the
opportunity to view how
my instructor interacted
with a mother and the way
a correct assessment is
performed. One aspect
that I lacked confidence in
was my ability to assess
the newborns heart rate. I
have impaired hearing to
begin with but being able
to focus on listening the
rapid heartbeat was a
challenge. But through
repetition and ensuring I
have as much silence as
possible, I have developed
little techniques to listen
effectively.
Another area I struggled
with was reducing my

anxiety in this new

environment. This
definitely inhibited my
quality of care being given
because I was focusing on
my rapid heart rate and
feelings of faintness and
instability. Once I began
feeling comfortable in my
abilities, my anxiousness
subsided, for the most
part, and I begun to
flourish in my
communication and
assessment techniques.

While performing my
assessments, I ensured that
the moment I was finished, or
shortly thereafter, I would
chart my findings and
compare them to previous
results. This is an important
aspect of nursing because it
ensures accountability with a
signature being given and
that the patient receives
competent care. I always
arrive to clinical prepared by
creating a sort of checklist or
chart that ensures I
remember to gain all of the
information required and
guide my conversation with
the patient. This will prepare
me in the future so
eventually I will be able to
ask the right questions
instinctually.

One of the diverse

transitional experiences most
mothers will encounter is
they method of feeding their
newborn. If a mother chooses
to breastfeed, I can inform
them that if they are having
struggles, there is a lactation
consultant on staff as well as
a breastfeeding clinic that is
available to their disposal.
Most mothers will appreciate
this because it is a difficult
experience for some people
and they will be more
prepared when the time
comes to take their newborn
home.
