Atlas
An atlas is a book of maps. You will
find information about continents,
countries, landforms, natural
resources, and even some
information about the people who live
in different places.
The important fact to remember is that
an atlas is a book of maps.

Almanac
Librarians often call an almanac a
year book, because it is published
(or made) once a year. An almanac is
mostly about things that happened
during that year. It is important to
remember that an almanac has lists,
facts, and up to date information
about many things that happened
during that year or right before.

Dictionary
A dictionary is a reference book that
contains words listed in alphabetical
order. It gives the following
information for each word
O Definition or the words meaning
O Part of speech (noun, verb,
adjective)
O Pronunciation or how to say the
word
O A sample sentence so that you can
see how the word is used in a
sentence.

Encyclopedia
A book, a set of books or volumes, or
an online site that contains general
information about a lot of
different subjects. The information
is in alphabetical order by the subject.
You can find information about
history, geography, science, and
famous people past and present. It
is a good place to go if you want to
know more about a place, a person, or
something that happened in the past.

Thesaurus
The word thesaurus means a treasury
or storehouse of words. A thesaurus is
much like a dictionary except that it
gives a list of synonyms or words that
mean the same thing. Many
thesauruses give antonyms or
opposite words also.
A thesaurus is a good place to go if you
are writing and want to find a different
word for what you want to say.

Periodicals:
Magazines and newspapers are called periodicals
because they come out periodically or every once in
a while.
