The Basics of Covert Hypnosis

Covert hypnosis which is also known as conversational hypnosis is a
process of inducing a hypnotic trance through everyday conversation. The
reason we call this process covert is that the language patterns that we use
would appear to a laymen to be entirely benign.
The use of conversational hypnosis was first developed by the therapist
Milton Erickson. The methods that he developed still form the basis for
what is now term covert hypnosis. Because of the importance of Eriksons
work conversational hypnosis is also sometimes known as Eriksson
Hypnosis.
So how is it possible that we can induce these trance states? The first
thing you need to understand is that trance states are in fact completely
natural and occur through out the day. We enter trance states whenever
we start to find our mind wandering or when we become engrossed in a
book. It is in essence a state of limited consciousness where we are open

to new suggestions. By learning the methods

of covert hypnosis we are able to induce
these states in the subject.
Once we have placed the subject into these
trance states we can use other techniques to
persuade them to our point of view, allow
them to see things from a different or wider
perspective or to embed specific commands.
The methods that we use to do these vary but
include techniques such as double blinds,
embedded commands and nested loops.
In order to become skilled as a
conversational hypnotist you must first learn
how to improve your own abilities of observation. Master covert
hypnotist can seemingly read peoples minds. Although in truth what
really is taking place is that they become so finely attuned to subtle
changes in body movement and physiology that they know what is going
on in the thoughts of the subject. This allows them to pace the hypnotic
induction correctly.

Anyone can master the skills of covert hypnosis. It does though take both
time and practice. There is a significant body of knowledge to absorb and
a skilled conversational hypnotist will refine their skills over many years.
Like any skill it can be used for both ill or good. In this way it resembles
a martial art. The practioner of such an art can themselves. use their skills
to inflict pain on someone or they can use it to defend themselves. The

The Benefits of Covert Hypnosis

Covert hypnosis is a series of
techniques which use seemingly
normal conversation patterns to
help persuade people to your
point view. Using these
techniques you are able to place
people into a trance state
without them knowing and then
embed commands. But what are
the benefits of covert hypnosis
and why is it worth your time
learning these techniques?
Almost everything of a substantial nature that we want to achieve in life
must be done through other people. Whether it is motivating our
employees, getting members of electorate to vote for us, persuading
someone to buy our products or inspiring a group of people to take up our
cause. If we want to achieve something big then we need to master the
ability of persuasion.
Throughout history some of the greatest persuaders have been masters of
the techniques of covert hypnosis. Of course not all of these master

persuaders would have formally recognized their language techniques as

covert hypnosis. The body of knowledge which is covert hypnosis is
relatively new and has only recently started to become formalized. But
none the less the techniques are the same.
One of the most significant examples of this in the 20 th century was
Adolph Hitler. Looking back many Germans find is difficult to explain
their actions during the period of Nazism. It was as if they said they were
hypnotized. In fact this is closer to the truth than they realize. Hitler had
one great skill and that was the ability to use hypnotic language in his
oratory.
This is not to advocate this kind of destructive use of covert hypnosis. But
these skills are completely neutral. They can be used for evil or they can
be used for good and it really is up to the person that masters them to
decide to what purpose they will be used. Politicians to this day are still
using the techniques of covert hypnosis. It is only once you have studied
these methods that you realize just how prevalent their use is.
Another area where people would like to be more persuasive is in
personal relationships. Whether it is convincing your child of why it is
best if they clean their room or finish their homework or allow someone
to see the possibilities of dating you and how good that could feel.
There are in fact few things that
cannot be attained in life if you
can truly master the skills of
conversational hypnosis. The
benefits that you will gain from
learning these skills will far
outweigh any time or money
that you spend acquiring them.

Covert Hypnosis and Double Binds

One of the simplest conversational hypnotic techniques is the double bind.
This technique is most effectively used in actual covert hypnosis session
where you have already induced a trance state but it can actual be used in

normal conversation whenever you need a convenient way of persuading

another person to take the course of action that you want.
The double bind offers what seems like a choice to the subject but in fact
no matter which path they take they will head towards the destination that
you have predetermined. Before setting your double bind you must know
what outcome it is that you desire. Do you want your child to do their
homework? Do you want someone to go out on a date with you? Do you
want the prospect to purchase your services? Whatever you outcome is
designate that before beginning the conversation. It is an important
principle of covert hypnosis that in order to be successful you must know
where it is that you want to go.
Once you have decided what outcome you want you can create a double
bind which will achieve that end no matter what choice your subject takes.
For example if we were asking someone out on a date we might ask as
our first question Should I pick you up at 6 or 8? The supposition is
that they will in fact go out with us. People tend to choose the path of
least resistance and when given two choices they will take one of these
rather than rejecting the question altogether.
Another example might be to ask your customer Will you be paying now
or later? Again there seems to be an element of choice but both
scenarios result in the customer paying. When trying to make behavioural
change you must suggest I dont know whether these changes will come
soon or sometime in the future Again the suggestion is that the changes
are going to occur. If you suggest instead that these changes are going to
happen soon it is much easier for the subject to reject them. By offering
an element of choice they are much more likely to be accepted by the
unconscious mind.
Double binds are one of the easiest of the conversational hypnotic
techniques to master but their power should not be underestimated.
People are far less aware of the choices that they are being offered than
you might otherwise assume. They will naturally take the choices offered
to them if you use double binds correctly.
Using Vague Statements

In conversational hypnotism we often use

vague statements deliberately. As you will
see these can be a powerful way to covertly
induce agreement in our subjects and allow
people to find their own answers to their
problems. You will also see how this
technique is popular with politicians and
other people who need to convince a large
audience of their point of view.
At its most basic level being vague is
powerful because of how difficult it is to
disagree with. If we contrast being vague
with specificity we can see how this is true.
If for example I observe a woman walking
down the street and I say That woman is a lawyer then it is easy for my
friend to argue whether this is true or not based on observation. But if I
was to say That woman looks like she works in an office then it is
much harder to argue against. I have been vague in my supposition and so
it is more difficult to disagree with.
This use of deliberate vagueness is often used by politicians, CEOs and
personal development gurus when they need to convince a large audience.
If you listen to a politicians language you will hear that many statements
are deliberately vague. For example they will call for Change or for
Fairness without clearly defining what these terms would actually look
like. We can all agree that we believe in something like fairness. Once
they have used this deliberately vague statement and have gotten
agreement on something that all people would agree with they can begin
to lead their audience.
The other advantage of being vague is that people can put their own
beliefs on top of whatever it is that you are saying. By being deliberately
vague you leave open the possibility for your audience to interpret what
you are saying though the filters of your own beliefs. Learning how to use
language and words which are deliberately vague and removing
specificity can make a powerful difference to the way that you connect
with people.
This is of particular importance when you are talking to a large audience
where you may not know what all of the individual beliefs of those
audience members are. You do not want to disenfranchise any member of
the audience but at the same time you want to appear to be saying

something meaningful and motivating. The best public speakers sound

like they have been talking directly to your core beliefs when in fact what
they are saying could be interpreted a multitude of different ways.

How to Learn Conversational Hypnosis

Conversational hypnosis is the ability to use normal conversational
patterns in order to induce trance states where the subject is able to be
persuaded and influenced. Learning the skills of conversational hypnosis
does not happen over night but anyone who is willing to study can learn
the. Here we will take a look at the main ways that you can learn the
skills of conversational hypnosis.
One of the easiest ways to get started is to take advantage of the many
free resources that are available on the internet. It should be noted there is
no single resource which comprehensively teaches you for free
everything you need to know to become a covert hypnotist. However the
free articles and blogs that are available on the subject can teach you
specific techniques and provide a background to the subject. To actually
master the abilities of conversational hypnosis however you will need a
more rigorous and detailed lesson plan or tutoring.
Another way to learn the
skills
of
conversational
hypnosis is to study under a
master covert hypnotist. This
is one of the best ways to
learn because you will be able
to have your progress tracked
and corrected as you go. The
disadvantages of this method
are finding someone who is
sufficiently skilled at teaching
conversational hypnotism to
teach you. While there are many people who have the skills to perform
conversationally hypnosis if you live in a smaller town or city you may
not have anyone in your area who can teach you these skills. The other
disadvantage is cost. Master covert hypnotists tend to be in high demand
and thus can charge hefty fees for their advice.

Aside from one to one teaching in some larger cities there are classes
offered on conversational hypnotism. Again this is an excellent way to
study but it does depend on the quality of the teacher that takes the class.
Before choosing your class you should check for testimonials by past
students as to the results that they have achieved by attending the classes.
Again if you do not live in a city where such classes are offered then you
will not be able to use this study method unless you are willing to travel.
One of the best ways to study conversational hypnotism is through a paid
course. The best paid courses will include both written and audio material
that takes you step by step through the process of learning conversational
hypnotism. One of the other advantages of a study course is that you can
learn from the comfort of your own home at a pace that you desire. The
other advantage to this study method is cost. Typically with a home study
course you will pay roughly for the entire course what you would pay for
one hour with one on one instruction.
