Jensen, E. (2013). Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind: practical strategies for
raising achievement. Alexandria, Virginia: ASCD.
How the book impacted the way I think about leadership and/or impacted my leadership beliefs:
Engaging Students With Poverty In Mind promotes the concept the student engagement is
key to providing all students with the opportunities to experience learning success, with
this being especially true for students challenged by socio-economic issues. The authors
suggested solutions are the most valuable portions of the text, in my opinion! I definitely
will try several of the recommended strategies.
How the ideas gained from the book assist me in better understanding my internship experiences:
I am using the ideas and suggestions describing by Jensen to understand the cultures and
life situations experienced by the students at GISH Summer School. I have begun
developing an entirely new set of responses and strategies to engage reluctant students.
Not only will this help create a productive model of a summer school for CCHS, I believe
these improved strategies will help several students become more successful during the
regular school year; possibly eliminating the need for a remedial summer program!
The EDL Outcome/s are that I see most closely related to the points in the book and why:
Strategic = (1.1, 1.2, 1.6, 1.7) a clear vision is the common theme of the book creating a
learning environment in which all students can be successful
Instructional = (2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5) a variety of challenges are identified and possible solutions
suggested
Organizational = (3.2, 3.3) the learning environment is structured to be safe, efficient and
inclusive for all students
Community/Political = (4.2, 4.6, 4.7) diverse student cultures and needs are identified and
addressed to create a stronger learning environment for all students
Why I would recommend this book to colleagues: (bullet points)
Easy to read
Emphasizes the importance of building relationships with all students
Promotes raising the bar instead of dumbing down the curriculum to improve student
scores
Identifies common problems
Suggests practical solutions
Advocates staff collaboration and support
Leadership actions I will now take in the school setting to apply what I learned by reading this book:
I will strive to learn even more about my student home environments through a series of
activities and discussions
I will plan to use several of the suggested strategies to improve my classroom effectiveness
I will suggest the Jensen book to colleagues; possibly initiating a staff book study
