BCEE 451-Construction Engineering Assignment 2 (5%)

This document contains an assignment for a construction engineering course. It includes 3 questions: 1. Complete an earthwork calculation sheet and mass diagram to determine the volume of excess cut or fill. 2. Calculate the excavator production rate, trench production rate in linear meters, and expected material removal rate in BCM/hr using 2 dump trucks to haul material from a trench excavation. 3. Estimate the one way haul time of a scraper on a dry clay road with a 20% grade and one stop sign to get from tables in the provided textbook.

1. Complete the earthwork calculation sheet shown below and plot the resulting mass diagram. The
soil has a shrinkage factor of 0.9 Using the mass diagram determine what the volume of excess
cut or fill is.

2. A small hydraulic excavator backhoe is used to dig a trench in common earth. The trench size is
0.65 m wide and 1.50 m deep. The available excavator bucket is 0.75 m wide and has a heaped
capacity of 0.63 m3. The maximum digging depth of the excavator is 4.50 m, and the average
swing angle is expected to be 85.

a) Estimate the excavator production rate if the efficiency is 100%.
b) Estimate the hourly trench production rate in linear meters.
c) If the excavated material are removed by 12 BCM dump trucks, and the trucks travel and return
time to the dumping location is estimated to be 8 min, and fixed cycle time, excluding the loading
time, is 0.7 min. If there were only 2 trucks available to haul the material, what would the
expected production of the job in BCM/hr be?

3. Estimate the one way haul time of a scraper with a gross weight of 50,000 kg which is being
operated at a 1220 m long dry clay road with an altitude of 2445 m. The effective grade is 20%,
and there is one stop sign in the middle of the road.
