Practice Problems Physics (Work, Power, Energy and Rotational)

This document contains 6 practice physics problems involving work, power, energy, and rotational motion. Problem 1 involves finding the time and velocity for a hoop to start rolling without slipping on a pavement. Problem 2 involves calculating the moment of inertia and angular acceleration/velocity of a rod with attached masses that is pivoted at one end and released. Problem 3 involves calculating the velocity of a flat car leaking sand. Problem 4 involves calculating velocities and angular velocities after a point mass collides with and sticks to the end of a uniform rod. Problem 5 involves calculating the average force and power required to hold a machine gun firing bullets. Problem 6 involves calculating forces, energies, and particle coordinates as a function of time for a particle with given

1.
An upright hoop is projected on a pavement with an initial horizontal speed v0 but without spin
so that its slide. The resulting frictional force causes the hoop to spin to loose translational speed and to
acquire an angular speed. Eventually the hoop rolls without slipping and let be the coefficient of
friction
a) Find out time taken by the hoop to start rolling without slipping.
b) Find out the velocity of the hoop at no slipping.

2.
A rod with mass (AB) of Length L is pivoted at one end A so that it can swing free as pendulum.
Three masses A (m), B (2m) and C (3m) are attached to it at the distance L/4, L/3 and L/2 respectively
from end A. The rod is held horizontal and then it is released
a) Find the moment of Inertia of system about pivoted end
b) Find the angular acceleration of the rod at the instant it is release.
c) Find the angular velocity when rod is in vertically downwards position

3.
A flat car filled with sand is moving with velocity v. The flat car is leaking sand at the rate
dm/dt. Find the velocity of the flat car after half the amount has leaked
4.
A uniform road (AB) of length L and mass 2M rest on smooth horizontal surface. A point mass
M moving horizontally at right angles to the rod with initial velocity v collide with one end(A) and
sticks to it
a) Find the velocity of the center of mass of the system after collision
b) Find the angular velocity of the rod after the collision.
c) Find the total energy of the system after collision.

5.
A machine gun fires six bullets per sec into target. The mass of each bullet is 4g. The speeds is
600 m/s. Find the average force required to hold the gun in position. What is the power delivered to the
bullet?
6.
The Potential Energy U in joule of a particle of mass m = 2kg moving in the x-y plane is given
by the formula U = 6x +8y + 5
Here x and y are coordinates of the particle in meter
The particle is at (4, 6) at t =0 and v0 = 0
i and j are the unit vectors across x and y axis
a) Find the force acting on particle
b) Find the kinetic energy of the particle at time t
c) Find the time at which it crosses x axis and y axis and kinetic energy at that points
d) Find the coordinates of the particle as a function of time t
e) Find the Potential energy of the particle at time t = 2 sec
