Drawing Triangles

This document provides instructions for drawing different types of triangles based on given information: 1. To draw an equilateral triangle when the side length is given, draw one side, open the compass to that length and draw arcs to find the other two vertices. 2. To draw an isosceles triangle when the base and height are given, draw the base, find the midpoint to locate one vertex, and use the compass to measure the height from the opposite end and locate the third vertex. 3. To draw a scalene triangle when the three side lengths are given, use the longest side as the base, place the compass at the endpoints to draw arcs of the other two side lengths to locate

DRAWING TRIANGLES

1. Drawing an equilateral triangle when we know the length of its sizes.

A B

• Draw segment AB the same length as the given measurement of

the side.
• Open the compass the length of AB and draw two arcs. These two
arcs intersect at point C (which is the opposite vertex of AB)
• The join points A, B and C complete the triangle

A B

2. Drawing an isosceles triangle when we know its base and height.

h
A B

• Draw the base a= AB. Find its middle point to get point M (bisector)
• To get vertex C, use your compass to measure the height of the
triangle h from point O.
• Join vertices A, B and C together to complete the triangle.

3. Drawing a triangle when we know the length of its three sizes

(Scalene).

• Use the longest side AB as the base. Using the vertex A as the
centre, trace and arc with the compass, the same length as side B.
• Place the compass point at vertex B and draw another arc the same
length as side a. In this way we obtain vertex C when the two arcs
cross.
• Complete the triangle by joining A and B with C.
