Athletes in The Media
Growing up as a child I Idolized many famous people. I used tell myself that one day I
would be successful and famous as them. Many of them where athletes as they showed that they
could be smart and athletic to show people the 2 sides of them. I also admired how they seemed
so transparent to, us the outside world. As I grew older I realized how much I admired my own
personal space and also the ability to keep personal business between my family and me. As I
realized that I had also noticed how celebrities always had their personal business broadcasted on
the new. The people that looked to as though they had no privacy was many athletes.
One the morning of November 28, 2008 I woke up and was watching ESPN while me
and my dad were eating breakfast; All of a sudden a breaking story had come in where Plaxico
Burress, The prized wide receiver of me and my dad favorite football team, The New York
Giants, had been hospitalized after shooting himself in the leg the night before at a club. After
this he was then suspended by the NFL indefinitely until he had his case heard or dropped. After
having to sit out an entire season he was released by the New York Giants due to pressure from
the NFL. After being released he was fined and had to pay it before he could join another NFL
team. After paying the fine Burress was signed by the New York Jets and played about 1 season
before he was released and still remains a free agent to this day. This is an important example
because as a man he was being punished by the entire country and the league. His personal
business had been exposed to the public.
After that many athletes had their business exposed to the world without their control.
This made a big splash on social media as it aided as the main distribution source of the athletes
personal business. This eventually made it so that bosses and business would search social media
to try and catch their employees doing bad things. In an article written by Peter Han & Mark A.
Dodds they talked about a court case and how it was a dispute over a company monitoring is
employees and athletes on Social Media. The name of the case was Pietrylo v. Hillstone
Restaurant Group, 2008. In this case the court reached a decision that the plaintiff was in
violation of the Stored Communications Act of New Jersey by accessing the social media page
without authorization, so jury found in favor of the defendant. [1]
As a person on the outside I feel as though I understand the athletes pain where they are
being mauled and extorted for their personal info when all they ever wanted to do was play the
sport that they loved. I believe that athletes in the media and employees in general should not be
about to get in trouble over personal issues and social media, like many athletes get in trouble
for, they should only be obligated to do their job and be able to live a normal life on the side.
