HBL
INTRODUCTION
Company Description:
HABIB BANK LIMITED (HBL) is not an overnight success story. HBL is a Banking Company,
which is engaged in Commercial & Retail Banking and related services domestically and overseas.

HBL was incorporated on 25th August 1941 and operated in the private sector until its
nationalizations in 1974. HBL has been approved for privatizations and the privatizations
commission has selected a Financial Advisor to prepare a comprehensive plan and assist in the sale
process. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Pakistan's founding father, realized the importance of financial
intermediation while he was campaigning for the creation of a separate homeland for the Muslims of
India. He persuaded the Habib family to establish a commercial bank that could serve the Indian
Muslim community. His initiative resulted in the creation of Habib Bank in 1941, with HO in
Bombay (now Mumbai), and fixed capital of 25,000 rupees. The bank played an important role in
mobilizing funds from the Muslim community to finance the All-India Muslim League's campaign
for the establishment of Pakistan. Habib Bank also played an important role in channeling relief
funds to the people hurt in the communal riots and violence that preceded the departure of the British
from India.
After Pakistan was born in 1947 Habib Bank, at the urging of Government
The government has appointed a professional management team to restructure the bank and to
recover and clean its doubtful and classified portfolio. This is regulated under the Banking
Ordinance 1962 & the Companies Ordinance 1984

in 1972 to commemorate the bank’s 25th Anniversary.
HBL was incorporated on 25th August 1941 and operated in the private sector until its
nationalization in 1974. HBL has been approved for privatizations and the privatization commission
has selected a Financial Advisor to prepare a comprehensive plan and assist in the sale process. The
government has appointed a professional management team to restructure the bank and to recover
and clean its doubtful and classified portfolio.
With a domestic market share of over 40%, HBL was nationalized in 1974 and it continued to
dominate the commercial banking sector with a major market share in inward foreign remittances
(55%) and loans to small industries, traders and farmers. International operations were expanded to
include the USA, Singapore, Oman, and BelgiuSeychelles.
On December 29, 2003 Pakistan's Privatization Commission announced that the Government of
Pakistan had formally granted the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) rights to
51% of the shareholding in HBL, against an investment of PKR 22.409 billion (USD 389 million). On
February 26, 2004, management control was handed over to AKFED. The Board of Directors was
reconstituted to have four AKFED nominees, including the Chairman and the President/CEO and
three Government of Pakistan nominees.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
Information System:
Definition: Management Information Systems (MIS) is the term given to the discipline
focused on the integration of computer systems with the aims and objectives on an
organization.
11
Applications of MIS :
With computers being as ubiquitous as they are today, there's hardly any large business
that does not rely extensively on their IT systems. However, there are several specific
fields in which MIS has become invaluable.
* Strategy Support:
While computers cannot create business strategies by themselves they can assist
management in understanding the effects of their strategies, and help enable effective
decision-making.
MIS systems can be used to transform data into information useful for decision making.
Computers can provide financial statements and performance reports to assist in the
planning, monitoring and implementation of strategy.
* Data Processing:
Benefits of MIS:
The field of MIS can deliver a great many benefits to enterprises in every industry.
Expert organizations such as the Institute of MIS along with peer reviewed journals such
as MIS Quarterly continue to find and report new ways to use MIS to achieve business
objectives.
Core Competencies:
Every market leading enterprise will have at least one core competency – that is, a
function they perform better than their competition. By building an exceptional
12
management information system into the enterprise it is possible to push out ahead of the
competition. MIS systems provide the tools necessary to gain a better understanding of
the market as well as a better understanding of the enterprise itself.
Quick Reflexes:
Further information about MIS can be found at the Bentley College Journal of MIS and
the US Treasury’s MIS handbook, and an example of an organizational MIS division can
be found at the Department of Social Services for the state of Connecticut.
Information Technology:
Management Information Systems at HBL are where people plan, develop, use, manage,
and study computer-based information systems in organizations. Management
information system provides information to support decision-making by mangers. MIS at
HBL provides reports and display to managers.

Integrated components of bank branch information systems belong to Softec main
solutions. These solutions include support of cash and non-cash operations (cash, travel
cheques, bank cheques etc.) between cash desks and client or between bank branches.
Supported bank branch operations include simple and bulk cashless transfers, standing
orders, automated transfers, collections.. Debit cards agenda represents the important part
of solutions for bank branch systems; it deals with registration of debit cards and their
holders, accounts, charging, correspondence, card blocking etc. Safe-deposit box
administration is also part of solutions for bank branch systems.

HARDWARE
-The physical, touchable, material parts of a computer or other system. The term is used
to distinguish these fixed parts of a system from the more changeable software or data
components which it executes, stores, or carries.
Computer hardware typically consists chiefly of electronic devices (CPU, memory,
display) with some electromechanical parts (keyboard, printer, disk drives, tape drives,
loudspeakers) for input, output, and storage, though completely non-electronic
(mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic, biological) computers have also been
conceived of and built.
EXPLANATION: The stuff you can actually see and touch, and would likely break if
you threw it out a fifth story window is hardware
Not everybody has exactly the same hardware. But those of you, who have a desktop
system, like the example shown in Figure 1, probably have most of the components
shown in that same figure. Those of you with notebook computers probably have most of
the same components. Only in your case the components are all integrated into a single
book-sized portable unit.

Random Access Memory (RAM);
Pronounced ram, acronym for random access memory, a type of computer memory that
can be accessed randomly; that is, and any byte of memory can be accessed without
touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in
computers and other devices, such as printers.
HARD DISK;
The H - A hard disk is part of a unit, often called a "disk drive," "hard drive," or
"hard disk drive," that store and provides relatively quick access to large amounts
of data on an electromagnetically charged surface or set of surfaces. Today's
19
computers typically come with a hard disk that contains several billion bytes
(gigabytes) of storage. Ard Disk
SOFTWARE
A set of instructions given to the computer in machine code that tells the computer what
to do and how to perform the given task of the user is known as computer software
All programs on a computer system can break down into two main categories:
1. System software
2. Application software

Every device like monitor mouse modem sound card etc come in the market with
program stored on floppy or CD ROM which control its all functions and characteristics
of that hardware this program is called device driver.
ALLIED SOFTWARE
Microsoft Office:
21
Microsoft Office is used as allied software. This MS Office is purchase from Microsoft at
a cost of $250 per year and per user. This office is completely licensed.
Open Office:
Open office is freebase and freeware. It is free of cost and also without licensed.
Reports:
Every kind of report is generated by the software (SYMBOLS HBL). These reports are
generated on the requirement. Reports are generated on the daily basis. These reports are
used to check the daily transactions.
HBL being ranked in top five banks of Pakistan is quite possessive about its online
system and was using very good banking software “MIBS” – Multi Currency Inter-
branch system. This banking software fulfilled all the weaknesses of previous system and
had very strong reporting features. But it had a major flaw too that can hampers the
growth of bank i.e. It’s not a real time banking software
With the passage of time banking became more and more service oriented. Now days all
banks especially foreign banks provide real time banking services, So HBL being quite
aggressive in its operations again took first step towards it and purchases “SYMBOLS”
banking software from Singapore Company “System Access”. Symbol’s is
internationally recognized and well renowned banking software especially for its multi
system and for providing wide range of modules i.e.

HBL after providing training to staff (region wise) starts its installation in all branches
from 2005. SYMBOLS is an integrated customer centric solution for Retail and corporate
banking, designed to support small, medium or large branch networks in personalized
delivery of all banking products and services to all kinds of banking customers. It enables
all services related to current accounts, savings accounts, term deposits, and customer
lending.
System Features:
Multi-branch functionality is one of the prominent features of the system. Customer does
not have to physically go to the ‘home’ branch to do a transaction; any SYMBOLS
branch would provide the desired services, in addition to the available e-banking
facilities.

DATABASE
“Database is a collection of information that you organize and access according to the
logical structure of that information.”
Types of Database:-
Distributed Database:
When data is stored on different location it is called distributed database.
Centralized Database:
When data is stored on one location and it is used by different location it is called
centralized database.
24
DATABASE STRUCTURE OF HBL
Every organization keeps its database and structure of one organization is different from
other. Big organization has different structure than the organization having smaller in
size.
The database structure of HBL is centralized.
There is Main server called Phoenix in regional branch blue area where all data is
stored.
Main server remains active 24 hours in a day.
The main server is the intelligent server which automatically performs the actions
on the data sent by the branch.
It tells the real time position of the account .e.g. ATM

Network:
Network is linkage of or more system for the purpose of sharing data, sharing recourses
and sharing programs

NETWORKING

WAN
CAN

MAN
A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a broad area (i.e. any
network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national
boundaries [1]). Less formally, a WAN is a network that uses routers and public
communications links. Contrast with personal area networks (PANs), local area networks
(LANs), campus area networks (CANs), or metropolitan area networks (MANs), which
are usually limited to a room, building, campus or specific metropolitan area (e.g., a city)
respectively. The largest and most well-known example of a WAN is the Internet. A
WAN is a data communications network that covers a relatively broad geographic area
(i.e. one city to another and one country to another country) and that often uses
26
transmission facilities provided by common carriers, such as telephone companies. WAN
technologies generally function at the lower three layers of the OSI reference model: the
physical layer, the data link layer, and the network layer
A global area networks (GAN) (see also IEEE 802.20) specification is in development by
several groups, and there is no common definition. In general, however, a GAN is a
model for supporting mobile communications across an arbitrary number of wireless
LANs, satellite coverage areas, etc. The key challenge in mobile communications is
"handing off" the user communications from one local coverage area to the next. In IEEE
Project 802, this involves a succession of terrestrial WIRELESS local area network
(WLAN)
A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links
between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger network
(e.g., the Internet) instead of by physical wires. The data link layer protocols of the
virtual network are said to be tunneled through the larger network when this is the case.
One common application is secure communications through the public Internet, but a
VPN need not have explicit security features, such as authentication or content
Intranet:
An intranet is a set of networks, using the Internet Protocol and IP-based tools such as
web browsers and file transfer applications that are under the control of a single
administrative entity. That administrative entity closes the intranet to all but specific,
authorized users. Most commonly, an intranet is the internal network of an organization.
A large intranet will typically have at least one web server to provide users with
organizational information.

TOPOLOGIES
Bus Topology
Ring Topology
Star Topology
Tree Topology
Mesh Topology
Bus Topology
Ring Topology
Star Topology
Tree Topology
28
Bus Topology:
Bus topology is one the easiest topologies to install, it does not require lots of cabling.
There are two most popular Ethernet cable types which are used in this topology they are
10Base-2 and 10BaseT. Bus topology based networks works with very limited devices. It
performs fine as long as computer count remain with in 12 – 15, problems occurs when
number of computer increases.
Bus topology uses one common cable (backbone) to connect all devices in the network in
linear shape. Network interface cards of all network devices are attached to single
communication medium backbone cable.
Ring Topology:
Ring topology is one of the old ways of building computer network design and it is pretty
much obsolete. FDDI, SONET or Token Ring technologies are used to build ring
technology. It is not widely popular in terms of usability but incase if you find it any
where it will mostly be in schools or office buildings. In ring network topology
computers and other networking devices are attached to each other in such a way that
they have devices adjacent to each other (Left and right side). All messages are travelled
in the same directory either clockwise or anticlockwise. In case of failure of any device or
cable the whole network will be down and communication will not be possible.
29
Star Topology:
This is the most commonly used network topology design you will come across in LAN
computer networks. In Star, all computers are connected to central device called hub,
router or switches using Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) or Shielded Twisted Pair cables.
In star topology, we require more connecting devices like routers, cables unlike in bus
topology where entire network is supported by single backbone
Tree Topology:
Just as name suggest, the network design is little confusing and complex to understand at
first but if we have better understanding of Star and Bus topologies then Tree is very
30
simple. Tree topology is basically the mixture of many Star topology designs connected
together using bus topology. Devices like Hub can be directly connected to Tree bus and
each hub performs as root of a tree of the network devices. Tree topology is very
dynamic in nature and it holds potential of expandability of networks far better than other
topologies like Bus and Star.

Habib Bank, Pakistan's largest banking group, signified its renewed commitment to
building its IT infrastructure to deliver growth and improved services to its customers
across Pakistan and across the globe.
Moving towards this goal, Habib Bank selected Symantec Client Security and Symantec
Enterprise and Corporate Anti-Virus Solutions for roll out across 3300 users in the
organisation in partnership with IBM Pakistan and IOP.
Habib Bank has long been acknowledged as a leading player in Pakistan's service
industry. From being the first company in Pakistan to install a mainframe computer, to
installing the first ATM machine in the country, their focus on the importance of IT has
underlined their growth.
Banking sector that gives you services conveniently, 24-hour account access security is
very important factor and protecting your personal information it is very big task now a
days.
In HBL there is a scanner with the main server which scans the thumbs of the desired
person and allows them to access. Only branch manger and IT persons have the access to
work with server.
Besides this there is a separate ID and password for each employee using the computer
given by the authority so that without this they cannot use the computer.
For online banking HBL use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) in order to protect your
information and help them to save it confidential.
And uses the fair wall for the security
32
HBL use Norton antivirus and it is licensed software:
Security is a very important part of an information System, every organization has to
protect its vital data from unauthorized access for this purpose HBL consider security in
relation to the following situations:
Countermeasures:
Authorization
Views
Backup and recovery
Integrity
Encryption
(c) To ensure that no disruption or damage is caused to your hardware and/or software as
a result
Of using this site.
Although most database systems have incorporated backup and recovery tools into
their interfaces and infrastructure it is a good idea to understand what the backup and
recovery process involves, beyond the work flow of using the tools. With the
33
growing dependency in the workplace on information and general, and the
information in your database specifically, there has never been a time when safe
backups and reliable recoveries were more important.
It is not just the data files that need to be part of the backup process. You must also
backup the transaction logs of the database as well. Without the transaction logs the
data files are useless in a recovery event. How often you choose to perform these
backup routines is really dependent on the data requirements of your company. If you
do not know what those are then you need to find out either by referring to them or
asking for them to be created through a research and investigation process.
In HBL the data stored in hard disk of the branch server as back and secondly they have
the backup in hard disk in the head branch server and also record the data all the day in
the tape daily basis and also makes the files so in case of unforeseen they use the data
34
Criticism on HBL
1. Wastage of Time
2. Low Speed
3. Marketing speed
4. Low awareness
People and customers do not have awareness about new banking system because
they do not provide proper information about bank and online services.
1. E _Statement
35
Customers must provide the facility to make transaction through mobile. By doing this
customers can save time and also transportation expense.
After every transaction customers must inform that their transaction has been taken place.
4. Marketing development
5. Cyber warfare
Cyber warfare must adopt to prevent electronic attacks to save important documents and bank
privacy.
CONCLUSION
By adopting new technologies we can renew our banking sector and can fast our system.
HBL here using different technologies including new software to facilitate their
customers and also facilitating them.
At HBL we empower you to explore your highest potential work in areas you are
passionate about, build specialist knowledge, and hone your expertise and more.
