Loading Time Series Data

This document provides steps to load precipitation data into SWMM using the Time Series tool rather than loading it directly through the raingage dialog. It describes loading an external precipitation text file with date and rainfall amount data by creating a Time Series, selecting the external data file, and assigning the Time Series as the data source for the raingage object properties. It also notes that the simulation dates need to match the date range of the precipitation data file.

Getting Precipitation Data into SWMM
An easy way to load precipitation data into
SWMM is to use the Time Series
dialog/tool rather than to try to load data in
through the file option associated with the
raingage dialog.

Step 1: In the left column object listing,

click the Time Series (shown circled at
left) object then click the green + sign
(also shown circled at left).

Step 2: SWMM will launch a Time Series Editor dialog as shown immediately below. You need
to give the time series a name. Shown in Rainfall_data but any meaningful name is fine.
Click on the checkbox next to Use
external data file named below and
then you can use the browser to direct
SWMM to the location of your
precipitation text file.

Step 3: Your external data file should be a simple text file formatted as shown below (only the
first 11 lines are shown):
;precipitation
7/1/2007 0:00
7/2/2007 0:00
7/3/2007 0:00
7/4/2007 0:00
7/5/2007 0:00
7/6/2007 0:00
7/7/2007 0:00
7/8/2007 0:00
7/9/2007 0:00
7/10/2007 0:00

The first line (and any line) that starts with a semi-colon (;) is viewed as a comment and is
ignored by SWMM but can be useful to you so you can keep the contents of different time series
files straight.
Step 4: With you time series file
loaded, open the properties editor
for your raingage as shown at right.
Indicate that your Data Source is
TIMESERIES and your Series
Name should be the name you
indicated for your time series name
in Step 2.

Step 5: Before simulating, please be sure to

indicate to SWMM under Options (in the
left column object listing) the correct date
range for your simulation. For the
homework at hand you have three dates to
indicate:

Start Analysis on: 07/01/2007 is

appropriate
Start Reporting on: 07/01/2007 is
appropriate
End Analysis on. 10/01/2012 is
appropriate.

The time for each of these is 00:00 which

means midnight.
