Functions and Graphs Notes

This document discusses functions and graphs. It defines one-to-one, many-to-one, and one-to-many mappings. A function is any relationship that maps each element in a domain set to only one element in the range set. The domain is the set of all first elements or x-coordinates of ordered pairs, while the range is the set of all second elements or y-coordinates. Different types of functions that can be graphed are linear, quadratic, reciprocal, cubic, square root, absolute, and piecewise-defined. Properties of functions include being one-to-one, even, odd, increasing, or decreasing. A composite function is defined as G o F = G(F

Functions
Any relationship which maps one element in set A to one and only one elemet in set B is
said to be a function.
Mapping : 0ne-one & many-one are functions
Graph : vertical line test (domain cuts the graph at exactly one point, then f is a function
Example:

The domain is the set of all first elements of ordered pairs (x-coordinates).
Maximal domain : Largest possible domain
Example: 1)f(x) = x 2 domain is (x : x R}
2)f(x) =

x+3

domain is {x : x R, x -3}

The range is the set of all second elements of ordered pairs (y-coordinates).
Example : 1) f(x) = 2x 3, x0 for x0, y-3 hence, range of f is {y : y -3} or [-3,

Domain and range can be seen clearly from a graph.

Example 2:

Domain: {1, 3, 4, 6}
Range: {-2, 2, 5}
