This document provides instructions for teaching a lesson on calculating the volume of rectangular prisms. It includes what students should do when they enter the classroom, watching an introductory video on volume, key vocabulary terms like prism and volume, an explanation of how the volume formula works by multiplying the area of the base by the height, and steps for using the formula to find the volume of a rectangular prism.

What: Volume of Rectangular Prisms
Objective: SWBAT calculate the volume
of a rectangular prism or cube by multiplying the length width and height by labeling it with the appropriate units with 80% accuracy.
What to Do When I Come In:
1.Sit down in my seat QUIETLY 2.Get out your Math Folder, Math Notebook and a pencil. 3.Start writing down the date, the WHAT, and the OBJ. 4.Wait quietly for the lesson to start.
Prism: A 3-D figure with two parallel congruent bases. What types of bases can a prism have?
Volume: The number of 1 by 1 by 1
cubic units or unit cubes needed to fill the space of a 3-D shape. How it is found: Counting the cubes or using the formula How it is measured: cubic units (units3).
How Does the Formula Work
We could just count all the cubes, but that would be a lot of work. To find volume of a prism, we use the formula Area of the Base times the height. Bxh
Since the we are focusing on rectangular
prisms, our bases will be..and our volume formula will look like this. l x w x h (length times width times height)
Food for thought:
If the formula for all prisms is B x h and the specific formula for a rectangular prism is l x w x h, what do you think the formula for a triangular prism looks like? Or even a trapezoid prism? Talk to your partner for 1 minute!
Steps for Rectangular
Prisms 1. Write Down Formula (l x w x h) 2. Find the numbers that represent length, width, and height in your formula and plug them in. 3. Solve/Multiply. 4. Dont forget your units!
