Diaphragm Valves By: Er. Laxman Singh Sankhla B.E.Mech., Chartered Engineer Jodhpur, India

A diaphragm valve uses a flexible diaphragm instead of a valve disc to open and close flow. When the diaphragm is forced down, it completely closes the valve, and when fully open, the diaphragm does not restrict flow. Diaphragm valves require less maintenance than conventional valves since there is no stem or stem packing in the flow path. They are often used for highly corrosive materials as the diaphragm is usually made of a rubberized compound.

DIAPHRAGM VALVE
A diaphragm valve (see figure 13 below) is not like the other valves. It does
not have a valve disc. The diaphragm valve uses a flexible diaphragm as its
opening / closing element.

Figure 13 Diaphragm valve.

When the diaphragm is forced downward it completely closes the valve.
When it is completely open the diaphragm is out of the line of flow so it does
not restrict it. There is no valve stem in the flow path. No stem packing is
required. These types of valve require less maintenance than the
conventional valves.
The diaphragm is usually made of a rubberised compound so these valves
are often used where highly corrosive materials are present. Figure 14 shows
the three position of a diaphragm valve.
