Lec 01

This document outlines the syllabus and expectations for a physics course. It will include 16 Physics Learning Checks (PLCs) graded on a 14-A to 8-D scale. Students have varying math backgrounds but all need help with physics. The document defines science as seeking knowledge about the universe and physics experimentally studying the laws of nature. It prompts students for their definitions of science, physics, and matter, and discusses that matter has mass and takes up space, allowing its motion through space and time to be studied.

Basic Math
Your backgrounds: strong in math (duh!), all over the
place in physics.
I will skip many things I assume you know. You must
stop me if I assume incorrectly!
Mini-test.

Science?
Write down your definition of science.
discuss
Write down your definition of physics.

Write down your definition of matter.
discuss later; hold on to it for now

Science is the process of seeking and applying

knowledge about the universe.

Classroom Inquiry

These are idealized models!

It will not/should not happen exactly like this in the

classroom!!

Laws of Nature

The foundation of science is experiment.

Physics is an experimental science.
Without theories, experiments are like collections of
trivia.
Theory must not only explain everything that is known; it
must also predict that which is not yet known.

Matter
Your definitions (from earlier)
discuss
What is matter?
Not easy to define! (Except by listing properties.)
The Stuff the universe is made of.
Properties of matter.
You tell me.
What properties are essential?
Matter
has mass
takes up space (has volume)
Takes up space implies we can specify where in space
matter is.
Also implies that matter can move through space.
Aha! This gives us a starting point for doing physicsthe
motion of matter through space and time.
