Graphs of The Sine, Cosine and Tangent Functions: Precalculus 7-1

The document provides instructions for an activity to create graphs of the sine, cosine, and tangent functions using a paper plate, yarn, markers, spaghetti, and glue. Students will mark radian measures around a unit circle made with the paper plate, then use yarn and spaghetti to plot the sine and cosine graphs on paper based on these marks. This allows students to visualize the shapes and periodic properties of the trigonometric graphs.

Graphs of the Sine, Cosine and

Tangent Functions

PreCalculus 7-1

Make a unit circle by folding a paper plate

Activity

Start by folding the plate in half, and half

again
Once more

Activity

Now, with one fourth of the plate, carefully

draw two lines that divide the plate into
thirds, then crease ONE of these lines.
Open the plate, and mark the lines

Activity

Label the creases as shown in the picture

Activity

Add the
(x,y)
coordinates
, that is
cosine, sine

Activity

Wrap a piece of yarn around the circle, and

mark each of the main values on the yarn
with a marker.

Trigonometric Graphs - Activity

Put a straight line across two pieces of

paper, and transfer the radian measures
from the piece of yarn
Label each mark appropriately

Trigonometric Graphs - Activity

Break pieces of spaghetti to the length of the y value

(sine) for each graph marking.
At least one student create a cosine graph
Glue these pieces onto your paper at the appropriate
locations
Be sure to show the third and fourth quadrants as
negative.

Trigonometric Graphs - Activity

With another piece of yarn, or a marker,

connect all the tops of the spaghetti with a
smooth line.

Let the glue dry
