Purification Through Fractional Crystallization

This document describes a procedure for separating sodium nitrate (NaNO3) from a mixture with sodium chloride (NaCl) using fractional crystallization. A saturated solution of NaCl and NaNO3 is cooled to allow NaNO3 crystals to form while NaCl remains in solution. The NaNO3 crystals are then filtered and dried, yielding 20 grams of purified NaNO3 from an original 160 grams used, for a 12.5% recovery.

PURIFICATION THROUGH

FRACTIONAL
CRYSTILLATION

OBJECTIVES
To separate NaNO3 by using fractional
crystallization from a mixture of NaCl
and NaNO3.

OPERATNG PROCEDURE
Make a saturated solution with both NaCl and NaNO3 at 373k. This requires 17g
NaCl and 160g nanao3 on the basis of 100g water.
Separate any residual solid from the solution and then cool to room
temperature.
Nano3 will crystallize on cooling whereas NaCl will remain in the solution.
Separate the crystals by decanting and then filteration.
Wash the crystals with saturated solution of NaNO3 at room temperature.
Dry the washed crystals in the folds of filter paper and then cool in an oven
using hot air at 100 C.
Weigh the crystals and record. The %age yield can be expressed by the
following formula
yield (%) =mass of crystals obtained x 100/160.
Looking at the solubility curve, the theoretical yield should be approximately
57.5%.

OBSERVATIONS
Room temperature = 180C
Relative humidity = 28%
Raw materials:
NaCl = 17g
NaNO3 = 160g
water = 100g
Saturation temperature = 373k
Weight of wet crystals = 26g
Weight of dry crystals = 20g
Dryer temperature = 373k
Sample calculations
Original mass of nano3 = M1=160g
Mass of crystals recovered = M2= 20g
Percentage yield of nano3 crystals = M2 x 100/M1
= 20 x 100/160 =
