Hydrogen Purging from Generator


Topic

Stage-2, GTG Hydrogen purging with CO2

Objective

Carryout gas turbine generator hydrogen purging with CO2.

Team
1) Team for offline H2 purging

Instrumentation Maint : one person
Prerequisites:
GT is shutdown and on turning gear or stand still
PURGING THE H2 WITH CO2 VALVE OPERATION FOR PURGING DRAWING READY.

Sufficient ( 12 nos ) CO2 cylinders are available for purging operation.


Warm water arrangement is ready for warming CO2 cylinders.
Activity
1.

Hydrogen gas shutoff at source manual ball valve close at H2 bottling rack.

2.

All drain valves 61 to 67 kept in close.

3.

At Hydrogen control cabinet check 5, 6,9 and All other valves


are in close condition.

4.

1,2,3,4,7,8,10,11,12,13,16,,17,18,19,20,21 should be open to


vent H2 by CO2.

Close 50,51,20HS-2,52,53,20PV(lift the levers 20HS-2& 20PV for


close)

6.

Depressurise H2 By opening of valve 56 up to 0.5 bar to save


CO2 consumption.

7.

Close vent valve 56 when pressure reaches less than 0.5 bar.

Throttle valve 60 to limit the flow of CO2

9.

Open CO2 supply valve 60 manually at manifold.

10.

Change the 3 way valve direction RV-1 from H2 charge to purge.

11.

Open valves 55, 56, 58 when CO2 starts pressurising and keep
valve 56 in throttle condition to maintaining CO2 pressure.

12.

Check root valves 69, 70, 71,72,73,74 are in open condition.

13.

Calibrate percentage of H2 in CO2 with analyser at valve 57


RV1(purging & Normal operation positions same)

Check the purity of CO2 in H2

Generator case filled with CO2 meanwhile CO2 bottle should be


made ready for purging H2 with CO2 if necessary , Connect the
additional CO2 cylinders as required for purging.

Purity of the hydrogen in CO2 must be less than 5 % when


measured with portable calibrator. CO2 required 95%
concentration and 2 times the volume of the generator.
Close throttling valve 60 to cut the flow of CO2
Close CO2 supply valve 60 manually at manifold.
