Use Limit Laws To Evaluate Limits

This document provides examples of using limit laws to evaluate limits. It shows how to evaluate limits as variables approach certain values, determine if a limit does not exist, and convert to spherical coordinates to evaluate a triple limit. Limits can be evaluated by substituting expressions, analyzing the behavior of the numerator and denominator, and considering different approaches to the limit point. Converting to spherical coordinates allows some triple limits to be evaluated as a single variable approaches zero.

Use limit laws to evaluate limits

Example (1) : Compute

lim

(x,y)(0,0)

exp

1
.
x2 + y 2

Solution: Set r2 = x2 + y 2 . Then

1
1
1
r 2 = lim
lim exp

lim

r0

(x,y)(0,0)
e r2

= lim u = 0
u e
Example (2) : Compute

set u =

1
r2

xy z
.
(x,y,z)(1,1,0) cos(xyz)
lim

Solution: As lim(x,y,z)(1,1,0) xy z = 1 and lim(x,y,z)(1,1,0) cos(xyz) = cos 0 = 1, the answer

is 1.

Determine if the limit does not exist

Example (1) : Show that the limit

4 xy
.
(x,y)(2,2) 4 + xy
lim

Solution: As the denominator approaches to zero but the numerator is not, the limit does not
exist.
x2 y 2
Example (2) : Show that the limit
lim
.
(x,y)(0,0) x2 + y 2
Solution: Let (x, y) approach to (0, 0) along the straight line y = mx, where m can take
x2 y 2
any real value. This amounts to substitute y = mx in the limit and so
lim
=
(x,y)(0,0) x2 + y 2
(1 m2 )x2
1 m2
lim
=
. As m can be 1 or 2, the same limit, when (x, y) goes to (0, 0)
1 + m2
(x,y)(0,0) (1 + m2 )x2
along y = x, is 0; and when (x, y) goes to (0, 0) along y = 2x, is not zero. Therefore, the limit
does not exist.

Example (3) : Determine if the limit
lim
exists or not.
(x,y,z)(0,0,0) x2 + y 2 + z 2
Solution: Convert to spherical coordinates to get
xyz
2
(x,y,z)(0,0,0) x + y 2 + z 2
lim

3 sin cos sin sin cos

0

= lim sin cos sin sin cos = 0,
=

lim

as for any value of and , we always have

| sin cos sin sin cos | 1.
Therefore, the limit exists and its value is 0.
