Applied Mechanics (ME 14.101) Tutorial Sheet-6: (Tension, Compression & Shear)

This document is a tutorial sheet for an Applied Mechanics course covering topics related to tension, compression, and shear. It contains 8 practice problems of varying complexity involving the calculation of stress, strain, elastic constants, minimum diameter required to support a load without exceeding a stress limit, and total elongation of bars under axial forces. The problems provide real-world scenarios and specifications to calculate mechanical properties and behaviors when forces are applied to rods, wires, and bars made of various materials.

TUTORIAL SHEET-6
[Tension, Compression & Shear]

3.

A metal bar which is part of a frame is 50 mm

diameter and 300 mm long. It has tensile force
acting on it of 40 kN which tends to stretch it.
The modulus of elasticity is 205 x 109 N/m2.
Calculate the stress and strain in the bar and the
amount it stretches.
A rod of length 300 mm and diameter 20 mm is
subjected to an axial force of 20 kN. The
modulus of elasticity of the material is 2 x 10 5
N/mm2 and Poissons ratio is 0.28. Calculate
longitudinal and lateral strain.
While carrying out tensile test experiment in the
laboratory, following observations were made.
(1) Diameter of the specimen is 12.5 mm. (2)
Length of the specimen is 50 mm (3) Load at
proportional limit is 3000 kg (4) Maximum
load is 5250 kg (5) Strain at proportional limit is
0.0011 (6) Final length is 64 mm and (7)
Diameter over neck is 9.72 mm
Calculate, a) Modulus of elasticity E, b) Stress
at proportional limit, c) Ultimate stress,
d) %
elongation and e) % reduction in area

4.

A bar of 25 mm diameter is tested in tension. It

is observed that when a load of 60 kN is
applied, the extension measured over a guage
length of 200 mm is 0.12 mm and contraction
in diameter is 0.0045 mm. Find Poissons ratio
and elastic constants E, G, K. (Ans. = 0.3, E =
203718.3 N/mm2, G = 78353.2 N/mm2, K =
169765.25 N/mm2)

5.

A circular rod of 25 mm diameter and 500 mm

long is subjected to a tensile force of 60 kN.
Determine modulus of rigidity and bulk
modulus if Poissons ratio = 0.3 and Youngs
modulus E = 2 105 N/mm2.
(Ans. 0.7692 105 N/mm2, 1.667 105 N/mm2 )

6.

A load of 4000 N has to be raised at the end of

a steel wire. If the unit stress in the wire must
not exceed 80 N/mm2 what is the minimum
diameter required? What will be the extension
of 3.50 metre length of wire? Take E = 2 x 105
N/mm2.
(Ans. d= 7.979 mm, dl= 1.40mm)

7.

A brass bar having cross-sectional area of 900 mm2 is subjected to axial force as shown in figure.
Find the total elongation of the bar. Take E = 1 x 105 N/mm2.

8.

Determine the total strain in a bar made up of 40 mm diameter solid for a length of 80 mm and a
hollow circular section of outer diameter 40 mm and inner diameter of 20 mm for a length of 120
mm. Take E= 200 kN/mm2. The axial load is 80 kN. What will be the strain if the bar is solid
section for the full length?
