The diode will only open and allow the power to flow in one (the correct)
direction. This works great for battery power as well as daisy-chained
power from wall-warts. The diode itself has a consumption of approx. 0,6
volts so there is still 8,4 volts left which is more than enough for most
circuits. If this is not enough power but you want to use the diode as a
protection, you can use a socalled "charge pump IC" to beat it up to 9
volts or more again. A good charge pump IC for this is the IC MAX1044A.
