To protect effects pedals and active guitar circuits from damage caused by incorrect power polarity, a simple diode like a 1N4148 can be inserted in the power supply line. The diode will only allow power to flow in one direction, protecting the equipment from wrong polarity whether the power is from a battery or daisy-chained wall adapters.

Protect your stuff from wrong polarity

To protect your stompboxes or active guitar wirings from damages caused


by wrong polarity, you only need a simple diode, eg. 1N4148. Insert this
diode in the way shown on the drawing.

The diode will only open and allow the power to flow in one (the correct)
direction. This works great for battery power as well as daisy-chained
power from wall-warts. The diode itself has a consumption of approx. 0,6
volts so there is still 8,4 volts left which is more than enough for most
circuits. If this is not enough power but you want to use the diode as a
protection, you can use a socalled "charge pump IC" to beat it up to 9
volts or more again. A good charge pump IC for this is the IC MAX1044A.
