Soap Trailer Analysis

The trailer begins with a birds eye view, first of all using an
establishing of the East End. As its a Soap Opera we know its based
in one particular area, this linking in with the different social hubs,
which the characters socialise in. Non-diegetic music then begins to
play; with lyrics stating in the land of Gods and Monsters, I was an
Angel implying that the land is where they live and the Gods and
Monsters reflect characters personas. The low key lighting anchors
the fact the programme is a drama. It then zooms in; quickly turning
to a high shot of a woman crouched on the floor. It then goes to a mid
shot of the same women in the same position of her on the side,
however she is blurred out. In front of a camera theres a spider
crawling across, spiders connote fear, danger and evil. It then blurs
out the spider and focuses on the women, possibly comparing the
two together. We then see a close up, low shot of the women with a
prop in her hand, screwdriver. The lighting is once again low-key, so
the only part of her appearance you can intentionally see are the
whites of her eyes.

Furthermore, there is a low angled mid shot with low-key lighting in
front of him. Hes dragging a bin bag making the viewer interpret
many different things. The weather outside, quite dark with rain,
reflects the mood of the overall trailer, which once again reflects the
negativity of the mood the trailer is attempting to pursue. It then
goes to a slow motion scene of the man closing the bin; the man
giving a direct mode of address emphasizes the tension between the
audience and him. This enticing the audience to watch, as it gives an
ambiguous impression due to the enigma he gives off. This linking in
with his facial expression and posture, head down, eyes up with one
hand directly at the camera. This suggesting he has confidence and
control.

This style of cinematography is repeated with several different
characters, instigating these characters will play a large part in the
cycle of events about to occur. These include different scenarios; one
including a stained shirt with red stains, as an audience our first
thought is that its blood signifying death, violence and pain once
again anchoring the genre that is drama. They all have a similar
unresponsive facial expression, this linking to the Kuleshov effect,
this leaving an open-ended narrative of who committed the murder?

Overall the trailer is quite slow, reflecting slow pace life in Albert
Square. It then pans to a high shot of some of the cast, gradually
cutting to a higher shot until its a group shot of a birds eye view.
Across the last shot it states theres a killer amongst them then a
fade in of the memorable title Eastenders, then panning out fully to
show the whole group. This leaves the viewer with an ambiguous
ending, this making them desperate to see what happens next and
follow the story along. This means more viewers for Eastenders,
creating more money and a wider audience.
