This document contains data on the average mass of pennies minted each year from 1971 to 1996. For each year, the mass of 10 pennies was measured and recorded. The average mass and standard deviation were then calculated for each year. Over time, the average mass decreased slightly but remained around 3.1 grams until the early 1980s when it dropped to around 2.5 grams, where it remained for the rest of the period.
