This week in FLK-3

We celebrated all week!

Q and U were married
We Celebrated Nathans 6th Birthday

Happy Birthday Nathan!

We had a Hawaiian Day

We Celebrated Valentines Day

In Language: Letter Q and letter U were joined in holy matrimony in a lovely

ceremony planned by Miss Evans, Miss McKinley and Mrs. Angenet and officiated
by Miss Mason.
We finished the sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet in our Jolly Phonics
program and learned the letter/sound of Q. We worked in our booklets.
We continued with the unit, LOOK AT ME ! We read a poem called Our Family
Comes From Around the World and discussed the different families or
communities we belong to, ex. class, school, church, sport team, etc. We drew and
labeled a picture of what we like to do with our own family. We read the Mercer
Meyer book called When I get bigger and we drew and wrote about what each of
us wants to be when we grow up. Interesting!!!!
We did some more work around rhyming. We used word families and changed the
beginning sounds to make rhyming words. We identified beginning and end sounds.
Miss Evans worked with your children on THE HOUR OF CODE. The Hour of Code
is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and
show that anybody can learn the basics. The children learned how to move Crazy
Birds through a maze. The results were stellar!!!!
We continued our Snuggle Up and Read Program.
Miss Mason continued with the Blue Spruce books and read a book about a boy who
was teased for wearing a dress during play time. The children had to draw and label
what they would find if they went to a new planet.
Dalien the Alien has had successful sleepovers. His parents report from outer
space that they are thrilled with his earth education. This week he learned about
jewellery at Peytons house and zoos and cars at Andrews.
Gym: With the cake raffle, we had only one gym period this week. We squeezed in
a yoga session after the wedding to calm our bodies. It was fascinating to see
those who the change in body state in those who tried hard and concentrated as
Miss Evans led them through the workout.

Next week, we are set to begin Gymnastics..AGAIN! Your child should change
into shorts and a t-shirt. You may find it easier to put shorts on UNDER their
pants so all they need to do is remove the pants. We have Gym early in the day on
Tuesday and Friday. Please note : the children MUST have bare feet. Perhaps we
can NOT wear leotards Tuesday/Friday for a while??!
** If you are looking to play with your child, lots of us need extra practice
throwing and catching!
Religion: Through our winter activities and stories and poems, we experienced
the earth at rest as a trace of God. We continued to sign in on the SmartBoard
this week by describing how we felt.sleepy, worried, happy, energetic, confident,
etc.
We learned about St. Valentine and how he underwent a change of heart and was
jailed for his beliefs. He wrote letters to his friends from prison. These letters
were the basis for present day Valentines.
We celebrated Valentines as a school. We went to the cake raffle held in the gym.
Each of us put some tickets in the cake box of our choice in hopes that we MIGHT
win.
Science : We continued to watch and measure our Amaryllis bulb - the stems are
now HUGE! And it BLOOMED! Two huge, beautiful blooms.
Miss Evans made heart shaped crayons with the children. Taking the papers off
the crayons and breaking them into small bits was a comically group- based effort!
Miss Evans sits at the side counter and turns the under the cupboard light on
and the children gravitate to see what theyre doing next!
We also did some candy experiments. We placed Valentine conversation hearts in
carbonated pop and watched them dance. We put skittles in water and waited a
few minutes. When we observed, the S on the skittles were floating! We placed
skittles in a petri dish filled with water and watched what happened to the dye.
Cool! Finally, we placed a white carnation in red food colored water and watched
the red travel up into the white leaves of the flower. For all experiments, we
discussed WHY.
In Art: Miss Evans had the children do a relief painting of the word LOVE.

In Music, Drama and Dance: We had the children watch Will Ferrell lip sync Let
it Go on the Jimmy Fallons latest Lip Sync Off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=HvRypx1lbR4
Miss Evans and I further demonstrated and discussed what a lip sync is! When
the pace of exciting events slows a bit next week, we will begin to work with each
child on a lip sync to a song of their choice.
In Mathematics: We finished printing the numbers and moved on to counting. We
played various games that incorporated number recognition and counting. We
played Roll the Dice and Rock, Paper, Number! The children took their recognition
sheets home. They had fun with both games and some would benefit from practice
at home. We watched a number video and got an idea for a video of our own!
In Personal and Social Development: We continued discussing how to treat a
friend like WE would like to be treated. We talked more about Willow and how she
found her confidence to use her big voice to speak up for herself. We discussed
again that it is GOOD to speak up for ourselves, but there is a difference between
speaking up and being bossy.
In Inquiry/Directed Play: The big blocks were popular again this week for building
towers. There was lots of drawing and kinesethic counting!
