Novel Study

Outline
The novel portrays a future in which thefeednet, a
huge computer network(apparently an advanced
form of theInternet), is directly connected to the
brains of about 73% of American citizens by means
of an implanted device called afeed.
The feed allows people: to mentally access vast
digital knowledge databases (individually called
"sites"); to experience shareable virtual-reality
phenomena (including entertainment programs,
music, and even others' memories); to continually
interact with intrusivecorporationsin a personal
preference-basedway; and to communicate
telepathicallyon closed channels with others who

Privacyandself-ownershipare
constantly obstructed by messaged
advertisingfromcorporationsthat
participate indata mining(used to fit
individuals into consumer profiles
based on their buying patterns).

Plot
Titus and his friends decide to go to the moon for
spring break and plan to party at night clubs.
They have their feed hacked by an extremist.
Titus meets a girl named Violet in hospital while
he and his friends have to learn to live for awhile
without access to the Feednet.
Violet tries to go against the consumer profiling
and wants Titus to join her

Dystopian Characteristics
The novel is based in a futuristic America that
is run by corporations and consumerism.
Instead of government control the media and
large corperations run the country.
Americans destroyed our environment to the
point that there has to be artificial SunTM and
Clouds TM meaning someone had bought the
right to an artificial atmosphere!
Governmental control & Individual vs. Society

Setting
Futuristic America starting to
downfall because of consumerism.
Lesions are made to be cool by the
feed so that they dont realise that
they are starting to become ill.

Characters
Titus- main character torn between consumerism and
Violet.
Violet- Rebels agains the consumer profiling Feedtech
refuses to help fix her feed becasue she had rebelled.
Link- one of Titus's friends who was genetically cloned
to be a replica of Lincoln.
Calista- Links girlfriend who is the "ring leader" of the
girls and starts the fights against Violet

Andersons Style
Written from the view of main character of Titus.
Anderson is using satire of consumerism.
He is also satirising the deterioration of the
teenage language.
Throughout the novel the writing is "interrupted
by the media ( similar to how the characters
train of thought would be interrupted)

Language
Throughout the novel, Anderson emphasizes
his created slang and adolescent vocabulary
specific to the society inFeed.[6]This
extreme emphasis on the nature of the
teens' language use corresponds with the
theme of the dangers of overpowering
consumerism. Even the word choice that
characterizes the slang used in the novel
carries undertones of advertisements,
purchases, and corporation power. [3]

Conflicts
Titus is torn between being with Violet and
going against the consumer profiling
(individual vs society)
Violet's feed was not repaired correctly causing
different body parts to shut down until she
goes into a coma. (government control)
Were they the ones destoying her feed to
control her?
