Experiment Report Module

1) Abu notices that the shorter the rope length during his swinging exercise, the faster he swings. This leads him to investigate the relationship between rope length and swinging speed. 2) He designs an experiment to test different rope lengths, measuring the time for 10 oscillations at each length. He finds that period increases as rope length increases. 3) By plotting period squared against rope length on a graph, he determines that period squared is directly proportional to rope length. Therefore, the period of a swinging pendulum depends directly on the square root of its length.

CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS

Situation :
Diagram 2.1 and 2.2 show Abu
swinging to and fro using a rope
which is tied to a tree during a
physical training session in a camp.
The length of the rope is different in
the two diagrams. He notices that
the shorter the rope is, the faster he
swings.

Method

Tabulating the data

1. Tie one end of the thread to a brass bob and the other end
clamped to the retort clamp.
2. Adjust the thread so that the length from the point it is clamped
to the centre of the bob, L is 20.0 cm.
3. Oscillate the pendulum at a small angle of about 10.
4. Measure the time t1 for 10 complete oscillations. Record the
reading.
5. Measure the time t2 for 10 complete oscillations. Record the
reading.
6. Repeat procedures 2 to 5 for L = 30.0 cm, 40.0 cm, 50.0 cm
and 60.0 cm.
7. Record the data in the table provided.
8. Plot a graph of period2, T2 against length, L.

clamped to the retort clamp.
